Mine is stock, but I'm thinking of upgrading to the hardened Moser axles. I don't do any serious drag racing--I'm just tired of bad wheel bearings chewing up the softer stock axles. I replaced my stock bearings when they went bad about 15k miles ago, now the axle saver bearings are going out. I'm hoping I have better luck with the Mosers and an OE style bearing.

I decided not to go crazy with this car since I'll be trading up for a fifth gen in a couple of years.

I prefer richmond axles with the 10 bolt. the main problem with the 10 bolt is axle tube flex. well, thats part of the problem.

basically, when you hook, the axle tubes want to go forward relative to the center section, which then causes the pinion and ring gear to somewhat separate which then causes them to grind on the edges of the gears and... boom!

add to that the 7.5" rear is weak in its own right. a lot of people I know in my local car club, instead of shelling out 2500 bucks for a built 9", moser 12 bolt, or strange S60, they swap in an 8.8" rear from a blazer, explorer, or expedition. bolts in damn near perfect and is a cheap upgrade for the casual racer.

Oh I understand about the axle tube flex. I've spent many a night reading the horror stories on LS1tech

Hmmmmmm, interesting about that 8.8 rear. I just want to make mine a little stronger than it needs to be for a DD so I don't have to worry about breaking it during "spirited" driving. Not really worried about flex--I'm on street tires and I'm mostly stock.

flex happens.

on street tires, you are more prone to spinning if you apply too much power. which is a good thing. I'd rather spin than break.


you can have the axle tubes welded to the center section or even have some custom gussets made out of 1/4 steel to add some bracing.

That was the next item on the list, but I might just hold off and let the next guy worry about it. I plan to be out of this car in 2011/2012.

The good thing is my brother might buy it! An 02 Z and a 2011/2012 Z in the same family!
