Why wasn't the G8 GXP called the GTO?

I was just wondering why they never capatilised on the GTO name for the high line G8. I think that it would have been well received.

The GTO was a one off badge... the soul purpose of the 3-year run car was to bring back the muscle car feel...

the G8 falls in line with Pontiacs badging sequence (G3,G5,G6,G8)

Because everybody hated GM for using the name GTO on the 04-06 cars.

I think GM learned if you're going to use a throwback name like GTO, it better look a bit like a GTO.

Plus they'd like to have some uniform naming scheme in their lineup.

Yeah GM already screwed up the GTO name once before. They need some time for people to forget that mistake before bringing it back.

Yea I would have thought pple would have loved the GTO. But I see your guys point, I think it was prob. the looks. I for one wasn't impressed with the looks the first time I saw it cause I was expecting something more retro I think.

some people liked it. it was kind of an "in-between" type thing, bringing back muscle cars, with a modern twist.... only they twisted it too far.

I loved the sort of sleeper look they had. Particularly the '05-'06 years with the dual exhaust and hood scoops really did it for me. I thought about picking up a used one and a new CBR instead of the Camaro... but I decided to stick with the new car.

like others have said, using a classic name like that can have serious negative consequences when used on an 'undeserving' vehicle. i believe the 04-06 GTOs would've done much better & still been around today had they not called it a GTO. that thing looked like a big cavalier & i (along with many others) was upset by that. that said, calling a family sedan a GTO would have enthusiasts in an uproar!

Just like the Four Door Charger did when it came out. However, the general public got over it!

I would say a 4-door GTO would not fly, but I also said that about the Charger and it's done good. But with the GTO failing this last time, GM couldn't take the chance again on calling the G8 a GTO. I think the G8 name fits.

because GTOs have 2 doors, not 4... and even GM isn't stupid enough to make the same mistake Chrysler did with the Charger nameplate.

Because it's a G8 with an LS3 thrown in. Hence G8 with the GXP trim line.
