US Recovery Plan
If I had anything to do about this 800 billion dollar recovery plan, I would use only half and build a 400 billion manufacturing plant centrally located in the United States. I'd offer any unemployed a job if they could get there. (walk, wagon train, bicycle, however)
Once there, like Ellis Island was for immigrants, find out their trades, skills and offer them financial advances and basic needs. Then put them to work building something the world needs and uses. Like shoes, clothing, electronics, solar power and wind generators, whatever. Just make it, "made in USA" and high Quality at a price that competes with the global economy. I remember a time where "made in USA" meant something and "Made in Japan" was junk. I just hate to see money not well spent and pissed away, I am afraid that is just what is going to happen with this stimulus package. Time will tell... I'm counting on this North American built Camaro for sure. |

Right, but in the 30s they were making infrastructure and military items mostly.
To do it now would be a step in the wrong direction. The direction we're allready moving. You would have the Gov. with GREAT control of industry. Undercutting the private businesses. Until the privates took funding and then......well, you know what happens then. Can anyone say Russi................ |

Well this was what was on my mind and my point is Airbus. Italy, Germany, and France to name a few got together and build Airbus aircraft. This is a reason we don't have McDonnel Douglas and Rockwell International aircraft anymore. The only major player we have is left is Boeing . I'd just like to see this actual amount of 787 billion go for some rebuilding of whats been lost. Whatever it takes to get americans out of this rut with a good paying job making something the world needs. You might guess my camaro money depends on aviation .

I like your inspiration, but there are fewer and fewer products the world wants or needs at our labor rates. But there are plenty of things we could do just for ourselves. My thought was High Speed Rail. Infrastructure jobs, maintanance, manufacturing of engines, train cars. Many permanent jobs not just jobs that run out when the stimulus package runs dry.
Buy also you mentioned Shoes and that's a hot button with me. You see we Americans find it accpetable for Nike (among others not to just pick on them) to pay their athletes 100's of millions if not billions a year for endorsement deals. Tiger Woods alone I think gets some ridiculous $20 Million a year. Yet the shoes are built somewhere in some cheap labor country that probably pays less than a buck an hour. Let's just take Tiger's money. $20 Million divided by $30,000 ($15 an hour annual labor rate). Well that's 650 or so Americans that could be working. But instead of demanding Nike make shoes here, we applaud Tiger and buy more Nike stuff because of who has the endorsement deal. This is something that we as Americans could just simply not participate in. But we do and will. By the way, did you know that the electronics sold in Japan are built in Japan, but the same model sold here is made in Thailand, China or Korea? I know a guy that always buys his electronics when he travels to Japan. They protect their home turf. Americans? We just gladdly look for the cheapest thing we can find regardless of where it is made. So no we don't need a stimulus package to do what you want. We just have to stand up as Americans for Americans. No money needed. Sorry.....putting soap box away now.

I'm sure he is still suffering the pain of losing his $8 Million per year from Buick. I could console him with a ride in Number 3

Well there you have it, if americans buy american and the profits go into the pockets of americans, we will be alright....
This new 787 billion stimulus package needs more cowbell when it comes to permanent jobs. It still blows me away that the toyota camary is the #1 selling car in America. |

IMO insurmountable corruption in government, nothing is going to get better in America until the whole thing crashes down. :(
