OP that is quite scary! I would've done the same thing but also called the cops and told them there's a crazy guy with a hammer in the streets. What if you heard later on that this guy killed someone and you could've prevented it with a simple 911 call? As far as shooting this person, shooting someone should be a final attempt to get away. OP did the right thing by speeding off. I'm all for gun rights, my house is well protected with them but they will only be used as a last resort.
Your final statement, referencing the use of a gun as a "last resort" is what separates responsible gun ownership from the others, who look for a situation that they could use a firearm against another human as a "golden opportunity" of sorts. It is these rotten apples that truly will spoil the bunch! I am glad the OP and his car, and the homeless guy are all ok, but the authorities do need to get the homeless guy some help before he hurts someone or gets himself hurt.
