So yep a diesel VW can do mid 40's all day long. But a Cruze ECO can pull 42 all day long. So why pay for a diesel and all it's extra emissions clap trap and the premium for fuel when you can get other cars that get 40 plus?
By the way, the Grand Cherokee is certainly a nice truck. I considered on last year pretty seriously but still a little bigger than we wanted.
And 8 speeds? Yep!! Generally if you match the gearing right, you can get better driveability and put a longer gear on top for FE. But there is a maxmum that makes sense. Otherwise you might as well go CVT.

Agree with all except that people are aceraging mid 40s in the Diesel VWs, 42 is the Cruze Eco HWY MPG only and averages seeem to be in the mid 30s range, all of that is with a 6 speed manual too, the auto is lower.
