Or more annoying. They might make it a 1 to 5 skip if 5th in the 7-speed is the same or close to the same ratio as 4th in the 6-speed

That's kinda how the new Mustangs do it, actually. Reverse is on the left and up, like first, except you have to push the shifter straight down in neutral before going left and up. There's really no way to accidentally hit it.
