The two ideas are actually related. See, 'Chevy' does indeed run deep ... in the US. Everybody in North America automatically equates Chevy to Chevrolet without thinking. But this isn't the case around the world where many buyers have never had a car before, and certainly not a Chevrolet, and they've never heard of Chevy. So trying to sell Chevrolets in those markets, while advertising Chevy, leads to obvious confusion. Particularly when there are brands like 'Chery' which sounds an awful lot like 'Chevy' to someone in China. To my knowledge, there is nothing out there that sounds like 'Chevrolet'
