The fact that JD Power makes money selling car reviews to car producers is not a conspiracy theory, it is a fact (and not a new one). They make money selling their studies to manufacturers. Every car company that uses JD Power in an ad is basically a client, since they have to buy the rights to use it.
Not sure what going back far enough is supposed to mean, but as to parts falling off, I was thinking "Tundra" not "Yugo," though it has been a good comparison lately.
