Relative is the keyword here, and it is used in comparison to other vehicles available at the time. In which case, none of the current 3 pony cars are overweight by this definition.

i would say they are very much overweight. I bet that weight scale includes trucks.
take an average sized 4 door car like an accord and see that it weighs 3550lbs (32xx for 4cyl.) and now compare it to a 3900lbs camaro and you can see that the current pony cars are pretty damned chubby.
