I knew an owner like you. Her dog was bitten by a raccoon. She decided to be cheap and bandage up the wound herself. Two weeks later, she calls us and says her dog is sick. Turns out the wound had become infected and the tissue surrounding it had necrotized, you could see dead tissue and bone in it. The infection had spread through the dog's body and it was immediately euthanized. You could smell rotting flesh in the clinic for hours after the dog had been euthanized. This owner wanted to save a few bucks but ended up paying hundreds of dollars for euthanasia and disposal of her dog.

To the OP, take the dog to the vet as soon as possible. Waiting will only make the injury worse. We can do X-rays in less than five minutes on a slow day. If it isn't too serious, like a sprain or something, some pain meds such as Rimadyl and rest will do. If it actually is fractured, he'll probably need a cast or splint of some sort. Could take a few weeks to heal depending on the severity.

Again, do NOT follow Big Brunsy's "advice." Get the dog to the vet.
infection is easy to prevent, just give a shot of penecillin

as for when they obviously aren't gonna make it...
bullet = $.058
euthanized by vet = $200 +/-

I would have taken him to the vet the same day. if you wait to long and the leg is broken that can cause more problems.
it's just a dog, and I've had several. Bought a St. Benard and the 4th day I had it the stupid thing ran under my car while I was leaving the driveway....it never went to the vet and turned out just fine for the most part. Lived a healthy couple years until it went off and never came back one day.
