Oil Pump Question

I have the car tore down for a cam upgrade and wondering if I should change the oil pump since I am right there now, looks like the Melling 10296 is a good choice but I cant find any selection of shim kits as I will have to take the pump apart to get it in so I will have to shim it correct ?

I can only work on the car on weekends so it will add another week to the project but from what I have read here it seems like thats the time to do it. The car currently idled just under 30 psi with stock pump so I cant really say it was giving me issues but I also read these pumps are prone to failure and I actually spoke to a guy last night whose pump failed 2 weeks after his cam install

Really need help on deciding which way to go and where to find the shim kits

Thanks

Shim kit not needed... If you want you can take the front of the melling pump off and use felt gauges to center the drive gears, some refer to this as shimming it.
Replacing the pump is a good amount of extra work but I recommend it. If you replace the pump, you should do the chain also

i would shim it for sure. i bought several feeler gauges to get the sizes i needed. you can cut the feeler gauge in half so you have two the same size. but dont put the cut side in first when measuring. due to sharp edge. i ended up dropping my pan and removed the pickup tube to insure perfect alignment. my pickup tube was putting to much force on the pump when in place and measuring. i would do the chain too. and Ls2 tensioner. mellings will give two choices on pumps depending on milage and mods. i went with the gm HD chain , if i did it again i would go with cr5 chain. the HD gm chain seemed to loose. I did here but dont know how true the cr5 chain was tighter. you want to be careful with not bending the pickup tube or miss aligned o-ring or damage o-ring. otherwise you will have oil pressure problems.

C5R chain is loose too, they all are on these engines. I just grabbed 3 sets of feeler gauges from Harbor Freight and shimmed the pump gears, its easy to do. I used a 10295 standard volume/high pressure pump. My opinion is that the extra volume of a 10296 pump is not needed.
