Air filter

Was looking for some cheap easy horsepower gains. I have a 2013 SS manual. I was looking at air filters, but I can't believe they want $400+ for these systems. Does the system really matter that much? It's basically a box with a filter in it, much like the stock setup. Has anyone compared just getting a new filter to getting an entire system and has the dyno numbers to back this up? Which filter or system should I get? What other easy gains are there? This is a daily summer driver, so I want to keep it reliable.

Thanks!

It depends on what you are looking for..guaranteed big horsepower gains aren't there. Better performance, fuel milage increase and critter repellent (my personal experience)...i.e deer, elk and bear hate the sound and avoid my car.

Yes I paid the 350, and have for each car and will continue to do so. K&n for all our dodges, CAI for my camaro.

Not going to feel much gain until you get rid of the cats... you're in Michigan, so do not now if that's legal, should you even care about that.

You might feel a little something with just a CAI... but the cats are what really restrict airflow on these cars, stock. Whether you go with headers and catless, or HFC's to 'free the flow', you're going to really feel the increase and how 'light on its feet' you car gets...

If you like, you can even get just a set of SOLO or JBA high flow cats, and that in its self will put a smile on your face, more so than a CAI.

A tune with better exhaust flow for even better results... a CAI (or 'air filter' as you put it) in combination with a good exhaust system and a tune is a nice entry package to some truly good gains.

Last note, if I only had 400 and wanted real gains - I'd get the high flow cats... Have fun...

No such thing as "cheap" gains.

Old timer here ...yes there are a couple posts of comparisons of the various cold air intakes done by Jannetty racing with dynos to compare from years ago...….. they were like called cold air intake dyno threads...………… https://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107002

I still have the stock air box on mine, rest of the car is bone stock as well.

I installed a stealth throttle controller and gained more out of just that than I would have expected from spending thousands in mods, for $200.
And I drag raced for 24 years, so I know the usual cost per performance gains...

The car will be an absolute monster with the throttle controller!

Yeah, no it won't. No difference in the dyno, no more power. Just a changed throttle mapping.

You want to install more power? It's easy:

I bought an air raid straight tube from summit buck25 and a dry high flow filter. then I took the lower part of the are box and opened it up between the ribs away from the engine. drilled out the plastic and dremeled the rest can't see it but it's there. call me tight but 4 to 5 hundred for cold air is kinda like a rip off to me.

Buy a used one...I sold my excellent Halltech system for like 200$.

I would buy high flow cats and maybe a drop in filter. Or just buy cheap headers and a canned tune with a drop in filter. That would be cheap and youd gain 3-5 mph on the 1/4. After that, its all $$$

The mod I felt the most was mid pipe(catted) when boltons. Its a solid 15-20rwhp. Headers didnt feel like a big upgrade then...I was used to it I guess.

K&N is the cheapest. Guy made over 510rwhp with (with H/C). So it works yeah.
