Another catalytic converter question
Couldn't find what I was looking for in a search, so I thought I would try this.
I'm right in the middle of installing my LSA supercharger.... If the math is correct, I should be looking at 550 or close to 600 hp. Now the question, I have 1 7/8 LT ARH with high flow cats........ will this cats survive the boost? I really don't drag race the car, I do a few high way pulls, but nothing crazy.

You will be fine at that power level.
Typically when you start getting over 600 some cats have problems. The American Racing stuff will hold up really good. |

I ditched my cats when I went with the LSA.
Not worth the risk. Plus E85 smells good if you go that route..

My good friend has almost the same set up, just no cats. And its just to goddamn loud. Quote:
2nd, iv seen some people on here that say to gut them, or run test pipes. All I want to see is, people that are running high hp numbers, under 600hp mark, are they having trouble with their ARH cats? Quote:
My problem is even with the HFC's that I have, you still have that egg smell.

The Good thing I found out was, ARH told me that just as long as Im not blowing flames out my exhaust, these HFC will be good at 600hp.

I say you will be fine, if you do drive it reasonable most of the time. I ran a set of OBX catalytic converters on my car for almost 2 years without any issue, and I was 630RWHP at the time. I did finally gut them, but it was more for peace of mind, as they were still fine when I pulled them to gut them. I'm sitting at 675RWHP now, and I think they still probably would have survived, because I drive it reasonable most of the time.
It's not the boost alone that kills the cats, it's the WOT fueling and the addition of boost that causes the cats to look like the image in Post #5, or worse. Having a good tune is paramount as well. Bottom line, run your cats and don't worry about it. If you start doing more drag racing than street driving, then you may want to re-consider the "gutted cat" option. By the way, I have 1-7/8" long tubes, gutted cats, full 3" exhaust and mufflers, and the car isn't any louder than it was with the cats, it just has a little raspiness to it now. -Scott |
