Looks like my motor is done for...

Turned my car on monday morning and heard a weird noise coming from my engine. Decided to take it around the block and the noise got louder and louder, also noticed loss of power until it completely gave out on me a couple blocks later. Hit my onstar button and had it towed to the nearest dealer. I don't really know how to link videos on here but my engine sounded exactly like this mans.

Im pretty sure my motor is done for. I only had 2900 miles on it and no modifications on it whatsoever. I don't know how I feel about a tech taking my car completely apart and all that, I know its a process but I feel like my car won't be the same. Its a brand new car, this isnt supposed to happen.

I will! Last update I got was that it was going to be a lengthy process because they were going to take the car completely apart, tranny and engine aaaand that I was getting an Equinox as a loner. Super tragic.

Not a lot of experience with GM LS engines specifically, but sounds like spun rod bearing to me. This is probably the 2nd most common engine issue on the STi and I thought it happened to my car at one point but turned out to be an improperly torqued clutch install (thankfully). The sound is almost identical to the one in the video you linked.

When is the last time you checked your oil level (note to self to check mine, currently at 800 miles)?

I was under the impression that these were proven engines from the Vette. Probably why they want to tear it down and find out exactly what failed - if there is a production issue they would want to find it before more start to fail.

If nothing else, request they give you an extended warranty on anything they take apart. Im willing to bet that GM has someone looking at it besides the local tech - they sent a guy in just to look at the wheels on my car when the paint failed on them. Im sure they will want to know what caused a catastrophic failure of the engine.

And whats with the loaner? Maybe for a quick repair but for an extended stay at the dealer they should put you in something at least as nice as your SS.

Mines an auto :(
Well I didnt check my oil level physically but through my app and car itself I would always give it a look. I was about to take it in this weekend for its first oil change actually, I didnt take it the past 2 weeks because of christmas and new years plus i knew it was going to have to stay a bit longer because of the recall it has.

They might be. Tech asked me today if i had any sort of tune on it.. I laughed and said unfortunately not, I wish. He did mention it was going to be a lengthy process and that he had no loaners at his disposal but as soon as the first one came in he would give me a call. Im going to request something nicer once they start getting other loaners in, I can't imagine myself driving an equinox for weeks.

Subscribed for the details. The hits keep coming. I want an SS so bad, but just keep seeing stuff like this and the rear end groan popping up over and over again.

The app doesn't tell you oil level, it shows you the calculated % of when to change the oil, oil life.

If you've never physically checked the oil level then it could very well have been very low as the oil level warning doesn't come on until its dangerously low.
