Manual transmission (put in reverse when parked)?
I've seen a few posts here about batteries being dead, and was wondering if it's in a majority of the M6.
When I got my M6 SS the dealer told me to put it in reverse when ever I parked it. Reason being is that when the shifter is in reverse, that it shuts down more of the electronics in the car. Has anyone else been told this? Or is the dealer just |

I have never heard this. I was taught to put it in reverse because reverse is the lowest gear, and therefore the most difficult one to move the car in, when I was in drivers ed.

I've always left it in 1st on level ground or when facing uphill. If I face downhill then I would put it in reverse. Don't really know if either way makes a difference.
Just never heard of putting it in reverse to shut down more of the electronics when the car is parked. |

I've not heard of the reverse thing shutting down electronics either. For me it's simple, if I pull into a spot I leave it in first, if I back into a spot I leave it in reverse.

If you're parked between cars, it's preferable to just leave it in neutral: this way, if somebody bumps you, it doesn't harm the transmission. Just make sure you've got the handbrake firmly set.
If on a hill, 1st gear if facing uphill; reverse if facing downhill. Just make sure to set the parking brake before releasing the clutch, so that the weight of the car is on the brake first; the gear is there only as a backup should the brake fail. |

That applies to the first production year of the 6th generation Corvette.

I usually have it 2nd....maybe 3rd...could be 4th for all I know. Never have put a manual car in reverse.
Had 4 of them over 10 years of driving, a couple 100,000 miles, just left it in gear, it didn't matter and never an issue.

Nothing in the manual transmission is electronic besides the switch for the reverse lights in reverse. All of the electronics are managed by the ECM. I am quite sure based on your dealer's advice they have no idea what an ECM is and you should never take your car there for service. They probably have never seen a tire before either. I cannot believe how stupid people who work at these dealerships are. I mean seriously. People wonder why salesmen get such a bad rap...... Stuff like this! I mean, just..... wow. |

It wears out the bushing. You'll just have a sloppy shifter. My dad does that in his semi and his shifter has all kinds of play, but works perfectly fine. I don't tend to in mine and my shifter is tight

I always leave it in 1st unless I'm in my driveway and then sometimes I put it in reverse. Doesn't really matter one way or the other. My hand is always resting on the shifter too. You just never know when one of those pesky mustangs is going to pull along side.

Shuts down electronics? The smoke he must blow to other customers..... I've NEVER heard this before, reverse is just the hardest gear to manually move the car in.
