Mixing fuels

In Arizona we basically have 91 octane, but there are a few places that sell "racing fuel" which is 100 octane. My question is can you mix the two and at what ratio? Also once mixed, can you just reset the tables or would a tune be required? I would like to be able to boost the octane this way without buying octane booster. Anyone done this?

Octane is a straight ratio. So 5 gallons of 91 and 5 gallons of 100 would be 91+100/2=95.5 octane. You can do the fuse pull deal to reset your fuel trims. Unless you get your IAT2 under control it really won't matter on the stock tune. Also, unless you have a tune loaded that adds more timing for the added octane, I wouldn't bother.

Thanks, do you know how high can you go up in octane without a tune? I am guessing you would add the gas, pull the fuses and let it sit overnight?

I was told somewhere on this forum that you cannot use racing fuel if it is leaded. Now unleaded racing fuel would be great and I was told it is made but have not checked into that any further.I just use the torco when I want to drag race the car and it works very well.

That is what I did before when mine was stock. It sure made a difference. Again I used the torco and it put it 111 octane I believe.

I will have to check if it is leaded, 111 without a tune? That would be great, maybe I will just have to go the torco route.

You can run whatever octane you want if it's unleaded. Added octane won't matter if you aren't tuned for it. You might see a few HP, but it's not going to be much. The stock tune is designed to make max power on 91/93 octane.

I know what Torco says it does with octane, but knowing that octane is a straight ratio, I don't see how you hit 111 octane adding Torco unless it's A LOT of Torco. You want max power just do 93-94 octane. Unless you add timing for more octane there's no point going past 93-94.

Well I just went out to the shop and got a can of it. It says +11octane with a 32 oz can on 10 gallons. So if you have 93 octane plus 11 that will be 104 octane. My mistake. I guess I was thinkin 111 when I saw the +11! O well sue me!!

VP MS109 is unleaded race gas I'd have to check my catalog but believe its 101 motor octane. It's what I run in my car. I have a handheld with different tunes for the fuel. Pump gas I run a max of about 18 degrees. On race gas I can run at 29 degrees

Can you run that in a car that is stock? All I can get is 91 octane here. I am trying to find a way to run higher octane on a race day, I have a CAI, but I want to keep my warranty for now but still get the best performance.

Yes you can but it's very expensive. I think you'd be better off just adding torco to race. I pay 25.00 a gallon for VP109. Before I had a race gas tune I used to add 1/2 can of VP equivalent to tank of gas just to be sure my octane was up. A night at the track can run me 250.00 just for fuel!!!

Did put it in the day before and pull the fuses that night? That's one thing I was confused on, does the car adapt to the increased octane by itself or do you have to reset the tables?

I think with a custom tune the tables are set and will not adapt. I don't think a fuse pull does anything like it does to a stock tune.
