Just 1/3 of Chevy dealers get initial allocations for 2014 Corvette Stingray

April 1, 2013 - 12:01 am ET

DETROIT -- Fewer than one in three Chevrolet dealerships will be eligible to sell the 2014 Corvette Stingray when it begins rolling off the assembly line in late summer.

Last week, General Motors notified about 900 of its roughly 3,000-plus Chevy dealerships that they have met the requirements to sell the redesigned Corvette, a GM spokesman says. Those dealerships can begin ordering 2014 Corvettes in the next few weeks.

GM is limiting allocation to its highest-volume Corvette dealers because it expects demand for the seventh-generation sports car to outstrip production. GM wants to get that limited number of Vettes into the hands of dealers that can best turn them. Those 900 dealerships accounted for 80 percent of Corvette sales in 2012.

Other Chevy dealerships won't be allocated the sports car until at least six to nine months after its launch, the spokesman says. It's unclear whether GM will open Corvette allocation beyond the initial 900 stores during the 2014 model year.

While Corvette is a low-volume model for most Chevy dealers, many lament being left out of the launch of the Stingray. They say the car has star power that generates showroom traffic.

To be eligible to get the Corvette, dealerships had to sell at least four Corvettes during 2012.

"Chevrolet provided dealers with guidance and requirements early in 2012 so dealers would know well in advance whether they would likely receive Corvette models during the initial six to nine months after launch," Russ Clark, Chevrolet marketing director for performance cars, said in a statement.

Stores eligible to order the Stingray still must meet several requirements ahead of the late summer launch.

For example, they must have Corvette Stingray specialists in sales and service.

And those sales specialists must complete a 1 1/2-day training session at the 2014 Corvette Stingray Dealer Sales Academy at Sprint Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nev. The cost is $2,000 per attendee, excluding travel expenses.

"The Corvette Stingray provides a great opportunity to attract new customers to Chevrolet and your dealership," says the letter, signed by Chevy sales chief Don Johnson and marketing head Chris Perry. "This is a once in a generation opportunity to demonstrate Chevrolet can deliver a beautifully designed, well-engineered, class leading performance car."

this is important:

Those 900 dealerships accounted for 80 percent of Corvette sales in 2012.

Many dealers don't even stock Corvettes. Would be silly for them to expect to be on the list.

I remember reading similar numbers and restrictions when the C6 was being introduced: 1/3 Chevrolet dealers never or rarely sold a Corvette while 1/3 sold one or two every three years. Of course back then there were over 6000 Chevrolet dealers where now there are less than 3100. At that time a dealer had to commit to obtaining specialized equipment and at least one tech trained to work on the C6 to get an allocation, now all that and a salesperson trained in the C7 mysteries. The more things change . . .

I am a little comfused as to the ordering order for the initial allocation. If a dealer has a allocation of 10 cars does that allow him to order ALL 10 at the same time?? Thanks, Lew

He could even order eleven but that would not be ethical.

Order go in en masse then Chevy starts picking for production. It can get complex, but some guideline. Chevy pulls order based on previous year orders, so two order last November will translate to two pulled orders this November. It will not be that simple because twice or more as many will be built each month than were the same month this previous year, but you get the point. All ten allocations may be ordered but it will take a few months for all ten to be built. The same for a dealer allocated one hundred just the numbers will be different.

yup...

these initial allocations should cover the first 6 months of production. so figure the # of coupes they received divided by 6 is how many they'll be able to push through monthly on avg.

Just wait wait wait....

Just ask... I have a good rapport with the Gen. Mgr. at my dealership and he keeps me up to date. They should know how many have been allocated to them for the first X no. of months or quarters...

if they're trying to spin that story on you there's a large chance they got 0. ie the wait would be significant...

Could be a good thing? I'm hoping come 2015 the color HUD will become standard on 1LT along with bringing back a burnt orange color or at least keep Laguna Blue. It better not be a one year run.

Yes I hope so.... who knows, by next spring-summer we may end up with leaks or facts on 2015 model revisions/updates.
