I had a loaner 1LT V6 (A8) and the AFM really got annoying after a while, It wasn't exactly smooth or urgent in transition. But that's with less cylinders, I always thought that mine had it but since it was a manual that it didn't kick in as much.

Explains why I don't get really good gas mileage, Oh well...

The OP has an RS manual — no skip shift, no AFM.

I will happily get ever so slightly less mpg than deal with AFM and all it's issues. God bless manual transmissions. And I'll also take being .3 seconds slower in a race to 60 mph for the enjoyment of driving a manual.

Yeah sure unless you drive at 50 mph with a good tailwind.

I also have a C7 with A8 and hate the implementation of AFM in that car. And yes, I'm contemplating a manual 2SS 6th gen as a replacement.

How does it work (on a A8)?
Are the 4 cyl disabled always the same or is there any kind of rotation?
Will the ZL1 A10 have the same?

to the Tuners out there: is that possible?
I thought that is how it was implemented in the C7s. AFM would only engage while in Tour Mode with the 7 speed manual.

I agree with you and that would make sense. If you have the AFM hardware already in the motor then why not have the option to use it while cruising on the highway in 6th gear and gain a few MPG. I get 32mpg in my A8 while highway cruising, what's not to like.

I wish GM would allow you to turn off AFM on all of their vehicles. Dodge does on their stuff, I just tune it out of mine as I don't like it. Plus I get better gas mileage with it off than with the AFM turned on.

It's always active with the A8 unless you put it in manual and shift with the paddles. It's only active in economy mode if you have the 7 speed manual.

A significant number of A8 equipped C7s shudder when the AFM puts the car in V4 mode. I'm not talking about the transition from V8 to V4, but while driving steady with the engine in V4. My dealer and GM both say its normal for AFM, but its annoying as hell and I want nothing to do with it in any other car.

I recently sold my Dodge Dually because we no longer own a 5th wheel RV. I just need something to haul stuff from Home Depot and was looking at a Colorado. I was really disappointed to see that they have implemented AFM in the V6 in that platform too. Does a V6 actually need AFM?

I got use to the skip shift after driving my GTO. If you just go to 20 mph I believe and it will avoided it or if your giving it like 20 -25% throttle but I could be wrong.

Not OPs question but if I had an A8, I would turn off the AFM with the range or a tune. GM had horrible AFM issues with lifters, pistons/rings and oil consumption on the early 07-12 5.3s. Has GM fixed the AFM issues????? Hopefully the M6 AFM lifters will not suffer as AFM is off.

Having experienced the AFM issues and repairs, (even running M-1, oil changes every 5,000). I would not chance it and would turn off the AFM.

Here is an example of what the early pilgrims of AFM went through:
