Except when your trade in, you get the value of the trade off the price of the new in terms of the portion you pay sales tax on. So there's that to figure into it too.

This seems to assume that the car payments are building equity (principle portion of payment) faster than depreciation is removing it. May not be true, especially in the first two years; you may just be falling farther behind.
