New to M6: my nightmare

I got a super-low mileage 2010 2SS LS3 a month ago. Love the car; it's awesome. Still "perfecting" my technique using the manual though, I'll be the first to admit.
This is my nightmare, which hasn't really happened yet but will eventually: I'm driving in stop and go, backed-up traffic and have to stop, several cars back, at a light on a decent incline. What the heck is the best way to handle inching forward a little at a time when traffic moves a little without burning up the clutch or stalling it or lurching forward too fast, etc? Am I the only one that dreads these kinds of situations with the M6 and isn't very good at them?

Just use the clutch or put it in neutral and push is your only options

Edit: avoid traffic too

I just don't move until it's a decent size gap. Like a few car lengths.

Practice several times on a hill with no traffic around. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

I agree with this! Also, it just takes some practice. An empty lot is your friend. If you can master taking off in 2nd without smoking it, you have it down. Just needs a little gas, let it out smoothly, and then push it in if needed for traffic. Become second nature after a while.

On a slope, you can always cheat by using the emergency brake. Start letting the clutch out and drop the brake. Don't set it. Just hold the button in.

As mentioned, stay in one spot until a larger than normal gap opens, then move. That cuts down the number of times you have to move. I've been driving manual for 27 years and still do this.

Also, pull up on the parking brake with button pressed for a second until you have let up on the clutch pedal a little and pressed down on the gas pedal a little.

Most of all, just find a hill where you can practice. You will catch on quick enough.

It's all muscle memory and practice. And I promise it isn't as bad as you have it in your head.

Try 5% throttle and a REALLY SLOW clutch release. You don't have to release all of the way, just enough to get to your next stopping point.

I deal with a few hills from time to time...I hate it when I have to stop on an uphill grade, and there's a car right on my ass behind me...So, to avoid this or rolling back from a dead stop...I go to first while still rolling, keeping as much room in front of me so I can still creep forward, or, (not ideal), hold it in place with the clutch. If I have to come to a complete stop, use the tach on the heads up just to make sure my rpm's are up a tad first. But, if I gotta goose it from a dead stop and chirp the tires from an uphill grade, oh well! lol

But, as others have said, you will get used to it...it will get better...(Heck, when my boy and I first drove it, we stalled out a bunch from popping the clutch, even on level ground!) lol

This is just one thing that comes with time. This is my first manual car and I gotta tell you I hate when someone creeps up behind you on a hill. I generally just let off my brake if I see them coming a ways back so they see me roll backwards and go oh he has a manual and hopefully give me some more room so I don't roll back into them =P

All good advice above btw

I take it knowing how to drive a manual trans is not required any more to get a drivers license? This ages me for sure. We could not take the drivers test unless we first passed manual trans in drivers ed in high school.

Just be careful and practice!!

We "learned" the concept of manual trans in a video based lesson. No drivers ed cars are manual anymore.

This is one of the reasons I got an automatic. I've driven manual a very few times and I know the process but I drive the car for work and I hit traffic daily. Pretty much I did not have the time to practice before having to go out in it.

I will own a manual one day tho.

Using the e-brake when on an incline is a good method too. I pull the e-brake and apply the gas until I feel it's ready to move forward, then release the e-brake.

I get a lot of assholes that like to pull right up to my bumper.

Usually I don't have people get that close to me. Usually I bump the throttle a bit and they back off.

I learned to drive with manual trans car, and loved it since day one. Yeah traffic is a pain, but love those open roads
