Metallic Paint Shortage due to Tsunami

.

As many around here have have already heard, our metallic paint colors were recently put on indefinite hiatus. The plant that produced Xirallic, a necessary paint additive for the metallic colors, was located 45 kilometers from the nuclear reactor in Fukushima, Japan. The plant was also damaged by the earthquakes.

I have read that this was the only plant in the world that produced that particular additive. The impact was industry-wide.

The good news is that the stuff is being produced again.

Merck, the company that owns it is planning a new factory located in Germany to prevent such shortages in the future.

I figured this thread could be a clearinghouse for info on the issue & a central location to be able to check on which & when our metallic colors are being given the green light again.

Here are a couple of links to recent news. (June 2011)

Yeah, it's been up and running since May...saw the report on Autoblog...but GM hasn't said anything about CGM and IBM being available yet.

Every dealer I have talked to, including those here on C5, don't know if CGM and IBM are coming back soon, mid-year, or ever.

I have an idea that this is a contributing factor to why we haven't seen pricing info for the 2012s yet. I just wish GM would give us some information, good bad, or otherwise.

Interesting MrDew......I hadn't heard about the Crystal Red also being constrained since it wasn't a color offered on the Camaro previously. It was only offered on Vettes and Caddy's as far as I knew.

As far as it being the end of March...that's 2 weeks before the constraint on the Camaro colors kicked in so I would assume it's related. They may have constrained CGM on the Vettes first because they were selling way more Camaros.

Well with SGM and RJT being retired, IBM, CGM, and now apparently CRT on hold(?), that leaves only 6 colors available for 2012. Seven if you count Carbon Flash Metallic, which is only available on the 45th Anniversary edition. There were 11 total colors available for the 2010-2011 model years.

For 2012 Crystal Red is replacing Red Jewel Tint Coat, which was also an affected color.

.

As far as I can decipher from utilizing Google, all of the metallic colors were affected from every manufacturer. The only colors without restrictions were the ones for which the companies had an ample supply of paint and/or already produced & painted cars on hand.

Here's a question....why didn't it effect Inferno Orange Metallic or Silver Ice Metallic? Do these 2 colors not have the xirallic component in them?

.

It's only a guess, but perhaps they had sufficient supplies on hand.

jhmurphy found a relevant article which I'm cross posting here.
