Headers and tune

If I change my headers and the cat is a engine light always going to happen no matter what or will a tune fix it I’ve seen some threads and not really a clear answer looking at getting bbk 1-7/8 “ and the cat and I wasn’t sure if a code was inevitable

When you get the tune, they will fix the engine light issue. Atleast, they should.

You need a tune or you will always have the check engine light.

A tune will take care of the CEL but you will still have permanent codes in the background since you didn't have the cat codes taken care of before starting the engine with the headers. This won't affect anything far as performance but could be an issue if your state plugs into the odb2 port.

You always need a tune with headers. Not just to get rid of the CEL, but running your car with headers when its not tuned for it can cause damage to the engine over time.

I’ve always been confused by the permanent code thing. Is there a way to get rid of them while still having headers on the car?

Here in AZ we have the whole obd2 plug in for emissions. No sniffer test. I have no cats/headers and didn't have the tune done till after the install (drove it to the shop) and had the check engine light on. Just got done with emissions and passed fine.

Then your state only cares about pending codes.

Not unless you add cats so the ECU can complete it's emission test cycle.
