OP I am very sorry for your car. It seems that parking in a garage and using a kill switch is essential.

I'd bet he could hack a garage code too. Sorry for your loss, op.

If he smashed a window, and entered through the window without unlocking from the inside, does that avoid having to relay a connection with the FOB nearby? Then it's just a matter of creating a duplicate/surrogate FOB using the OBDII?
Sorry if I'm being dense, just trying to understand tactics. |

Soft on crime policies sure aint helping the average law abiding citizens in these blue states and blue cities.
If we started choppin off hands (like they do in the middle east to thieves) this would be a non issue. All the liberals just clutched their pearls at that thought. "Physical repercussions for criminal actions? How dare you!..." LOL

This is an asshole thief issue and exposes a weakness in the auto industry where people can just get these devices, plug them into the your obd2 port, reprogram a key and drive off in your car. I’m blaming the auto industry for making it easy for thieves. Not just GM either, they all need to do better. |

For everyone saying put an air tag in the car, there are multiple issues with that.
1) correct me if I’m wrong but I believe our phones will notify us if an AirTag that’s not ours is nearby. 2) the cops are not going to follow the AirTag signal right away. By the time they actually do something about it the car will be destroyed/chopped up. 3) if we “take matters into our own hands” and follow the AirTag signal we will get in significantly more trouble than the a-holes that steal the car unfortunately (unless you live in Texas). Unfortunately the only solution is to install a kill switch or have a garage (preferably attached as there are more laws protecting the homeowner of an intruder is inside your house).

2) They might not but... 3) I will definitely follow it. It's dependent on the actions you take after following the AirTag's locations that will get you in trouble, not the actual act of going there. |

Unfortunately, even here in the red state of NC, your garage, even if attached, is NOT considered part of your house so all you can legally do is offer them a beer or something.

Get a few, I have an undisclosed amount hidden throughout and a few decoys that are easier to find so that if they start searching hard for them, they can find the decoys, toss them out, and think they've successfully eluded my tracking attempts.
The AirTags are kinda expensive for what they are but 4 packs often go on sale for $80 or so. It's hard to beat $80 for the peace of mind of knowing where your car is at all times. |
