GM Q3 2021 Sales Down 32.8%; 446,997 Units Sold
GM Reports Third-Quarter Sales
Company gains retail market share in key segments General Motors October 1, 2021 DETROIT — General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) dealers delivered 446,997 vehicles in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2021, down 218,195 units from a year ago as a result of semiconductor supply chain disruptions and historically low inventories. During the quarter, GM provided an update for investors that its wholesale volumes in North America in the second half of 2021 would be down about 200,000 units from the first half, largely because of supply chain disruptions in Malaysia caused by COVID-19, with most of the impact occurring during the third quarter. GM’s financial outlook is still expected to be within the calendar year guidance range previously provided as the company continues to develop solutions to mitigate the impacts of the semiconductor shortage and Chevrolet Bolt EV recall. “GM has been agile and decisive in managing COVID-related impacts on our production and wholesale volumes and we appreciate the support of our dealers and the loyalty of our customers,” said Steve Carlisle, executive vice president and president, GM North America. “The semiconductor supply disruptions that impacted our third-quarter wholesale and customer deliveries are improving. As we look to the fourth quarter, a steady flow of vehicles held at plants will continue to be released to dealers, we are restarting production at key crossover and car plants, and we look forward to a more stable operating environment through the fall.” Despite challenging conditions during the third quarter, GM maintained or increased its retail market share in key segments compared with a year ago, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates.
Year to date, total sales for Buick increased by 27 percent, GMC by 8 percent and Cadillac by 11 percent. Wholesale, production and inventory update
"While supply has been constraining sales in recent months, underlying demand conditions remain strong, thanks to ample job openings, growing pent-up vehicle demand and excess savings accumulated by many households during the pandemic," said Elaine Buckberg, GM chief economist. "We expect to continue selling every vehicle we can produce with rapid turnover." GM continues to build momentum with key product launches:

The Camaro production numbers are much worse than I thought. I realize it's mainly due to chip shortage but the numbers shouldn't be that low..

Can't sell what you can't build. It's going to be a rough year.

That LT1 sure isn't working out so well to increases sales is it? According to so many over on camaro6 it was going to be the "savior" and increase sales drastically lol. IMO after the botched 2019 facelift, it was game over once again for the Camaro.

This seems to go way beyond chips. I just ordered headers and wheels for my new Corvette and everything is a 3 month plus lead time. Talking to people in different fields it seems like demand is high right now along with supply already being low. People who normally can't afford certain goods now have the money too due to greater income from handouts than their typical salary. I think, though, this is intentional to drive wages up.

1) you have people who are home not working getting paid more to stay home than take a low-skill job 2) low-skilled jobs then need to increase wages beyond what is reasonable for said lack of skills to desperately fill positions 3) said business then passes increased wage costs on to consumers which in turn decreases buying power of those consumers due to excessive expenditure on the inflated prices 4) further class division ensues as lower middle class drops to lower class, dependence on government increases as said individuals need help now paying for sustenance they were otherwise handling themselves, etc. thus pumping out more entitlement money and circling back to point #1… But for the intents and purposes of GM earnings being down, it’s not just a chip shortage, but a significant portion of buyers who haven’t bought into Mary’s grandiose vision for the company’s future offerings. They already ceased making anything engaging to drive other than a Corvette which has never been for the masses, and the Camaro which is on its way out that most people, unless they care about road course times, are looking towards an ancient Challenger or the default Mustang.

It’s more utilitarian than the other options, Dodge keeps it “fresh” with new tweaks every year, and marketing is in-your-face and fun. If one doesn’t care about anything more than street performance, why would they want to buy anything else?

Just curious....Have all the 2021 Camaros that were built minus only the chip been completed (chip added)?
2022s are in the wild, 2021s should be caught up by now. |
