Just put the FRONT on the front of the motor and you are done, dont over think it

Old thread, but not too old
... Anyone know why it matters? Does "front" mean front of the engine or front of the gasket? There's only one set of jacket water holes. Do they go to the rear of the engine? |

The gasket is designed to help direct coolant flow correctly.
The front coolant passages are closed off for the most part so that more coolant will be directed towards the back of the block so to cool the rear cylinders. If the gaskets are installed backwards most of the coolant flow will be mostly in the front of the block and cylinder heads causing heat issues for the rear cylinders.
