Active fuel management

Any word yet when Camaro production resumes if they will be built without the active fuel management cylinder deactivation system like the Silverado due to the computer chip shortage?

I assume that if they can't get the chips that control AFM, they'll probably just fulfill manual transmission and LS orders for the time being

Tough to know what they'll do... They're moving ahead with production and delivery of the trucks with the AFM missing.

All they have to do is ask, and I will gladly give up my AFM chip to help someone else out with their ordered car. We live 4 miles from the GM truck assembly plant here in ft wayne...and they have a lot of new trucks setting around in various parking lots!

They should do away with it anyways since it really doesn't save you much fuel.

That is wishfull thinking and the best thing Chevrolet could do, leave out AFM. Just had mine tuned out... its like driving a different car and no more Manual mode driving all the time.

On 60 minutes they said it will take 8 months to fill the pipeline but the better long term news is they are building capacity back in the states. Companies overacted during the pandemic and cancelled chip orders which depleted the supply and now we are seeing the result.

You folks are missing the whole point. The AFM hardware (collapsible lifters) is in ALL of the LT1 engines whether its activated or not. My M6 SS had it, I don;t know abut the LT4.

Those lifters can fail...

Production supposedly resumed this week and will shut back down next week through June.

In the EPA test, it saves enough to keep the Camaro from the Gas Guzzler Tax.

My SS Sedan did not have AFM (thank goodness) and I believe the GGT was $1,700.

It isn't there to save you fuel (it does a bit) it's there to avoid the GGT under EPA testing.

Oh I'm sure the EPA had a part but In my opinion it's the stupidest thing they've added to these cars. The lifters they put in there are complete junk and are a prone failure point for these engines. I'd happily pay the additional 1700 or whatever price they would set just to not have it.

Gotta wonder if Camaro production will actually resume this week because it makes zero sense to start back up only to shut back down in a week for 2 more months... I have been reading that new car production in general across all brands could be permanently reduced because the manufacturers and dealers now realize that a limited supply of vehicles on hand increases profits for both the dealers and the manufacturers, with fewer factory incentives needed and much reduced floor plan interest. Many dealers are now charging full MSRP or higher and if a customer walks there is another right behind who will pay the full price of admission.
