You are supposed to go easy on them for 1,500 miles. 500/ 1500 mile oil changes & rear diff.

I took it easy with mine even though it was used with less than 500 miles when I bought it last year in March. Some folks break theirs in driving like they stole them and some drive them normal. The choice is yours!

Just follow the break in schedule outlined in the owners manual and all will be fine.
All 'may' be fine by just taking it to the track straight from the showroom. I've seen both scenarios and they both worked out fine for their owners. |

More important than the engine is getting acclimated to the car. It is easy to drive slow or around town, but when you punch it, this car can get away from you, even in the turns.

My last CAMARO was an '02 Z28 FBO-car with a 4000-stall, more than 1-years ago. That was FUN on CRAPPY street tires then. I could watch the tach for shift extension and about whatever else I wanted. Things happened pretty fast but there was time to think about what I was doing, how the car was running, how the car felt, etc. But now... There's no time for any of that, HAHAHA. The car sprinted so quickly I couldn't tell you how much boost I was making before I was in Mexico-type speed. And there's no way with the kind of power these cars make that my '02 could put it down as well as this one can. To the original post: I got mine with like 10-miles on the clock. I drove it home about 400-miles on the freeway, with a couple spirited acceleration runs. I drove it pretty hard a couple times before 500-miles. And then started driving it like I would typically - with little regard during short-bursts of spirited driving (e.g. accelerating WOT on on-ramps, from intersections, etc.). These were all less than a handful of seconds at a time. I put a blower on around 800-miles, and have been WOT from a dig many times tuning through now, with about 1200-miles. Car doesn't seem to care, and I, and any passenger either are smiling huge, or nearly crapping in their pants from the rush of acceleration. Diff' fluid change at 1000-miles (relatively clear, actually) and oil changes at 500 and 1000 (OEM Mobil 1).

We've had cars in the shop for a dyno tune and mods under 1k. Honestly give it 500 nice miles and then get in it a bit. Change the oil at 1k and you're good to go.

I've owned several performance cars and many, many hyperbikes. I've never subscribed to the factory's "keep it under x,000 rpm's for x,000 miles. So it's ok to be at 3,900 rpm's but not at 4,200 rpm's. And once you hit 1,500 miles, turn on the light switch. Doesn't make sense to me.
All my vehicles have consumed ZERO oil and have good longevity. I take it easy for 50-100 miles, then increase rpm and load every 100 miles, with some light load pulls to higher rpm's. At 1,000 miles, maybe a little less, I'm done.

I simply did not have the willpower to wait 1500 miles. I got the car with 200 miles on it and by mile 300 I was already testing it's capabilities. Full throttle here and there. Maybe for a few seconds a day or so. Then at 1k I got an oil change and since then haven't gone a day without laying fully into the pedal at least once.

I drive all my cars and trucks hard. Some real hard. Hell most cars have a 3 year bumper to bumper or longer warranty.
And TBH most of us won't keep any cars longer than 3 years anyways. |
