Automatic Very Slight Thud when Coming To A Stop (3rd To 1st Gear I think)
Hello,
I have a 2018 2SS Automatic transmission. When I am coming to a stop at a stop light, there is a slight, very slight thud when I come to a complete stop. I guess this is when the transmission is shifting from 3rd to 1st. Whereas, when I am near my garage and very slow already and then stop, this does Not happen (2nd to 1st I guess). My question is, is it normal (my dealer says it is normal just by listening to me because as usual no one could replicate it while they were driving or feel it while sitting in the passenger seat when I was replicating it for them). It also does Not happen when I am slowing down ahead of time and coming to a very gentle stop. I don't remember this happening until 6000 miles, now at 6400 miles after several mountain trips, I can feel it. Everything else, every other shift is absolutely normal so don't want the dealer to be experimenting with my car anymore. I also read about the TCM software update in some forum and I did also ask them about the TCM recall and they said the 2018's don't have that recall. I would really appreciate your thoughts. I just got the service done today (regular Mobil 1 oil change and stuff). I am going on a 6000+ mile road trip starting this weekend sow will keep you updated once I run it during the trip. Meanwhile, I would really appreciate your feedback. Last edited by kkriskal; 06-27-2018 at 03:29 PM. |

I've noticed on mine that it'll never shift from 3rd to 2nd, it always goes from 3rd to first, and always @ 5mph. There is a slight bump I can feel, but I can see the rpms bump a little too, so I'm assuming it's where the rev match happens, albeit slight.

This tranny is a huge pile of horse shit..lol. It has to be the worst shifting auto ive ever owned. That and im needing a second converter because the shudder has returned again. At wide open throttle it shifts fine but anything else is a crap shoot. you either get nice smooth shifts one day or the next day when you are leaving a light it feels like a 2 speed powerglide with a shift kit. the car is fast and capable but this tranny is aweful

It’s crazy how much they vary. I like my a8, shifts great, nice and firm and very fast. Only con for me is the delay when tapshifting.I had the shudder very early in the car’s life, got the triple flush. Not one shake since, with just shy of 10k since the flush, guess I lucked up.. the ZF 8 speed used in the chargers and challengers that everyone loves is, imo, not discernibly different in normal driving than my a8
If tuned these tranny’s are excellent, tune out all the slip and it will feel like a new car. If the 17s were as easily tuned as the 16s, mine would already be tuned. |

Very light throttle with modulation at a very slow speed. Almost guaranteed to give a bit of slip and jerk when I give it just enough to finally shift up. Stopping with moderate force from a very slow speed to back into a parking lot spot, guaranteed to give the clunk. Still shifts far smoother than I used to in my 5th Gen 99% of the time... |

Same statement, different method The variables are a true out of control science experiment. We know the AFM slip is the culprit. The reason they shift fine one day and not the next, is because all of that TCC friction material is flowing through all the circuits and solenoids. The debris moves around and clogs or restricts, then unclogs the fluid path. More HWY mileage w/ more AFM engagement is another factor. The A10 in ZL1 does not use AFM. The A10 in the SS DOES! Will AFM slip kill the SS A10? I shudder to think... Does the Range AFM disabler end shudder on the A8? That may be the solution for A8 and 2019 SS A10.
