Anyone have experiance with gt500?

Hey guys this isn't really a VS thread. But I have the opportunity to soon pay off my car. Instead of sinking 7 grand Into a turbo kit I'm considering usin my trade plus a few grand to get into a 07-09 maybe even a 2010 shelby gt500. I was born into a chevy family but I'm a true car enthusiast. Hopefully I don't get flamed but has anyone here owned or driven a gt500? They are pretty easy to get power out of. And from what I've read the engine and trans are all pretty stout. Of course I can upgrade to a SS for this price but there is something about the heritage of a gt500. My note on the gt500 would be small. And I actually have outstanding credit for a 24 year old, so the buying process shouldn't be difficult. Is there anything I need to look for when purchasing these cars(aside from portly done mods or heavily modified cars). I'm looking to get something with about 15-30k miles on it. How's the suspension? I know it's not as sophisticated as the camaro's. Welcoming any advice guys! Thanks!

I got my 2011 GT500 for 38k with 15k miles. Its an 11s capable car in the ¼ mile stock, low 11s with just drag radials, and 10s capable will pulley and tune with DRs. Very big difference in acceleration compared to the Camaro SS. Supposedly the block can handle 1200 hp but I don’t ever plan on going that high. It handles very well for being a solid rear axle car. With the SVT performance pack (on the 11-12 models) it beats the Boss 302 and hangs with the 1le on a track. On the VIR it beat the corvette grand sport, Audi r8 v10, and Fort GT.

http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/virgin...se-pre-01-2014

With that being said it is a very difficult car to drive. The tires loose traction a lot. I have gone sideways in 4th gear doing 100mph. definitely upgrade the tires if you decide on getting one. I would skip on the 2007-2009 models. They look outdated, still cost a lot, 500hp vs 550 for the 11-12 models, and you can get better performance with a brand new Charger/challenger R/T 392 scat pack for around the same price.

I appreciate that advice thanks! I'm perfectly ok with a 2007-2009 model though. And I get what you are saying about the scat pack. However you have more potential in a gt500. Everything is forged from te factory isn't it? That makes adding more boost easy. How's heat soak with you '11? Are you still running the stock exchanger?

I wouldn't bother with an 07-09 model... Not worth it imo. Even a 10-12 is just ehh for me. Still much prefer the ZL1. Now a 13-14 GT500 I'd have to think real hard on. But the others really aren't anything special when you can get a ZL1 instead. The 1LE isn't quite as quick in a straight line (equal with a 07-09 GT500) but it is still a much better all around car when it comes to refinement, braking, cornering, ect. So that's something else to consider as well.

Bone stock and no heat soak issues. The engine is all forged and has plasma cylinder walls. I also looked at Zl1s but they were about 10k more than what I paid for the GT500. The 11-12 Gt500 has a better power to weight ratio so could be faster in a straight line with manual transmissions being compared, and the Zl1 will be better on a autocross course due to an awesome suspension.

I see what you're saying but I'd really like something supercharged from the factory. This only leaves the zl1 and gt500 on the table for me. The zl1 technologically is a better car so of course it'll cost more. And trust me I'd love the 13 gt500 but I don't have enough cash. So a 07-09 or a 2011-2012 is kinda my limit.

07-09s, and even 10s (with the iron block) aren't exactly dropping significantly in value, but aren't staying in the 40s like 11s and up.

If you like the body style, nothing wrong with an 07-09.
They're still only a pulley/tune/tire away from mid 11s.

Just did some looking on another site and saw several in the high 20s to mid 30s. (07-10) with mileage ranging from 10k to 40s or so.

Yep! Those are te ones that have been catching my eye. For mileage I prefer nothing over 35k miles. And I've been seeing some really low mileage ones go for about 32k which I don't think is bad at all. I mean sure it's got the iron block but the potential of the car is still very high with simple bolt ons.

Anyone know the weight difference from the aluminum 11+ block to the 07-10 iron block?

"Using the PTWA process allows the block to have a thinner surface coating – only 150 microns deep – that is just as tough as one with cast or pressed-in iron or steel liners. However, using less material results in lower weight. According to Hameedi, the GT500 block is 8.5 pounds lighter than the sleeved GT version. Overall, the complete engine is 102 pounds lighter than the 2010 cast iron engine."

Google...it does a body good.

Thanks for the info guys! Sorry I was at work when I asked that question and we got busy. I think I could drop about 25-30 lbs going with a tubular k member and could help even out the weight distribution by relocating the battery to the trunk. Any other ideas?
