Men's Style Corner

Forgive me if this is out there already, I searched.

Been updating my wardrobe, okay, been building a proper one from the ground up(entering the interview process over the next 6 months). Just wanted to see if there were any shoe or suit aficionados around.

So first, I've had two pair of Florsheim Imperials in my life. The first I purchased about 20-21 years ago. I really wish I still had them since they don't have a comparable style available anymore.

I understand that the Florsheim name doesn't mean what it once did, but I found the Florsheim Royal Imperial Monroe that I really liked. I ordered it tonight.

There's a Allen Edmonds store about an hour from me. Probably going to make a trip to there in May to get fitted for a brown or burgundy wing tip.

Also on that trip, I've found a tailor in that area that might be okay. Think I'm going to look at three suits from them. Not much more expensive than some off the rack options. The tailor has been in that area since 1978 and been doing the work since 1968.

I have never had a suit tailored before. I'd really be interested to hear if anyone has anything to say about previous experiences with tailors, good or bad. Of course I'm checking Ask Andy and those places, but don't we all trust the opinions of fellow Camaro owners just a little more about things.

Oh I hear you, that was my work uniform for the last several years working bars and a poker game, but I guess ole Peter Pan over here decided to finally grow up and get a job that, I don't want to say requires something better, but different than I've ever needed.

I worked for a high end retail store in the men's department for the buyer. At that time, Hickey-Freeman was the best, see this link for them:

I also came across this article when I was doing research. Nordstrom is a pretty good store to go to if you want to "build your wardrobe". Also, some of the premium outlets have some high end men's clothing stores. I admire you for wanting to look your best!

Hi! Today's fashion is all about tight fit, whether it's shirt or pants.
Colour should be relatively close to the company's logo colour, chances are people who work there are also drawn by this colour so you'll be able to establish a bond immediately.

Nordstrom's is a good store. Just remember no thick fabrics in the summer (wool and Alabama go together like a toaster in the bathroom.) Try your best to stay away from pinstriping unless you want to be the flashiest person in the room. As far as shoes you can't go wrong with your choice, but I recommend wearing very vibrant socks. They're good conversation pieces with the ladies lo

I appreciate the input, and I agree that the slim fit is in and that would be pretty good advice for most people. But I'm what you call not slim, so I'm going to put a little faith in the tailor I've picked and let them suggest the fit, hopefully it works out.

You got that right about the wool. So when I go visit this tailor I'm going to be discussing breathability of fabrics with them. If I land a job in a cooler area then my next batch of suits could be warmer.

The shoes you posted look good. I'm a big fan of cap toe dress shoes, they go great with a suit, or slacks with a polo or button down.

If you're looking at getting three suits, I'd suggest a navy blue, a grey, and a black with pinstripes (not white pinstripes). Those three are all good for interviews, formal events, everyday business, etc. Plain black is alright, but can look like you're going to a funeral, so I usually prefer very subtle pinstripes in a black suit.

Also, make sure the shoe color matches your belt and matches the strap of your watch, if it's a leather watch. As someone else said, clothes are more fitting these days, so you'll find a lot of "slim fit" suits available. Depending on your physical build, that may be an option for you to reduce the number of alterations you'll need and for a sleek fit.

You'll also want to stock up on button down shirts. Again, slim fits are available and fit much better if you have the frame for it. White is always a go-to color, but it's good to have a variety. Light grey, yellow, blue, etc....all good choices if they match the suit. And of course there are ties. I've seen expensive ties, but for $15-$20, you can pretty much get any pattern/color tie you could imagine, just make sure it's made of silk.

For an interview, I'd suggest a navy blue suit, black shoes/belt, white shirt, and a red or yellow patterned tie.

Here's a good article about suits: http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index....or-a-navy-suit

The guy under "Choose a tie in a bold color" is wearing a good interview suit, although his is pinstriped. I'd go with a flat navy over pinstripes to an interview.

What's the job? Don't buy a fitted tux for a gig that requires business casual
