AutoZone rant
Ok so after nearly a month (well two months now) we finally have the transaxle on the bonneville fix & ready to put back in.
well the Transmission Guy (a buddy of mine) said to make sure you pick up tranny Flush before you install it because that will help get rid of all the metal scrap thats in the tranny. So I go in to Autozone with my husband & I asked them for Tranny Flush, They tried to sell us Tranny Conditioner saying this is what I needed. Of course My husband comes around the corner & said NO its not. & the guy goes Oh you with her? No we dont sell tranny flush & they dont make it. so We get in the truck & I asked my husband Napa or SMUCKS he said Napa, we walked in got greeted by one of my school mates & He asked us what we were looking for & I told him & goes OK, Its right here. OMG It says Engine & TRANNY Flush right on the bottle. Of course my husband said thats why they hire people who dont know anything about cars at Autozone. what a bunch of Dumb butts

I never have been impressed with autozone. I use a local Bumper 2 Bumper her and have had really great service. I avoid AZ at all costs.

I bet someone in building knew but it wasn't the guy that waited on you. They can't hire everyone that knows everything but the guy should have asked someone else that worked with him.

use to be a great bunch of people, now I dont know. They tend to have better prices than SMUCKs (they got rid of their Military discount) & sometimes are better than NAPA of course Napa knows me & knows that I know what I am talking about lol

I must be lucky; the Auto Zone right up the road actually has a few guys who know what they're doing. They also refer me multiple times to other places to get the right stuff when they know they don't have it and won't.
Not to mention one of the managers also owns an FBody so talking shop isn't bad. However the local O'Rileys.. I hope that place burns down with all hands. Staffed by seemingly every high school ghetto kid in town. |

anytime you take a technical subject like automotive, and pay a bunch of slackers $8/hour you get exactly whats mentioned in the OP story.. they're everywhere, even in Lowes and Home Depot...

I started out in a mom and pop auto store and miss those type. Now all that is around here is pep boys, auto zone, advanced. So far none have any sales people with automotive knowledge.
When pepboys came to illinois I worked at the first store. I kid you not...not one person with automotive parts sales or even automotive knowledge was behind the counter. I was the only person and was shocked. All were sales managers or retail people from department stores. If I wasnt their they bugged the mechanics or service writers for help. For me it was like working 5 jobs at once. To this day it's the same thing. Walk in and their is a long ass line at the counter because the sales person is the cashiers trying to look up parts. They have this dumbfounded look on their face. To top it off its even easier today with the computer schematics right on the screen to help them. Pfft in the hay day we have to rummage through stacks and stacks of book for a part number. |

I was a District Manager for 20 years with O'Reillys and you will find that some stores for any auto parts company has staff that has no experiance. It depends on the manager and the DM. The auto parts companies have to hire lower cost employees to maintain a controllably payroll. The part that matters is the training after those guys and girls are hired. Good training program with friendly customer service are the keys to being a success in the parts industry.

We go to O'reilly's around here.
Autozone, Advanced Auto (Discount Auto) are overrun by kids that are clueless. If it isn't in the computer they have no idea.

Tranny and Engine flush fluids can create more problems than they solve. They tend to be petroleum distillate based and will "break-free" junk that would have been better left alone. This junk then cycles through the Engine/Tranny (depending on what you are flushing) leaving score marks on cylinder walls (engine) and score marks in valve body cylinders (Tranny) and clogs in high pressure fluid lines (Tranny).
Let the trans filter do it's job and change it after 500 miles. Whatever you do, if you do decide to use the fluid flush, don't leave it in the tranny for more than 10 - 20 miles. The flush thins out the tranny fluid. It will start shifting weird and parts will wear more rapidly due to the thin viscosity of the fluid with the flush in it.

Its a hit or miss thing with all the parts stores I have been to. However when I do find a guy that knows his stuff thats where I take my business. More than once I have almost had my head explode in dealing with the counter folks at a parts store.

I know it's online, but I have had good luck with www.Rockauto.com the few times I have used them. Really good prices too.

Tell you how good this guy is, when some of the top dragracers need transmissions rebuilt for their cars in this area, they go to him hands down. When there is a car to be tuned in this area, his name always comes up. He didnt have to rebuild this transaxle for us, he could of told us like every other shop did, to deal with it via the company, but he treated us well & got the job done. ontop of the money we gave him, he also got 1:6th scale camaro RC car (in red which is his wifes camaros color & something else lol)
