Ac issue...

My 2017 camaro. Every now amd then the ac won't cool. When I disconnect the negative terminal for about 5 minutes it works fine.

Why is this happening?

When it happens it won't cool amd after I turn the car off the fan on the engine stays on for a longtime.

I'd check the thermostat, the A/C could be turned off and the engine fan running for a long time after key off because the ECM thinks the engine is overheating.

Need more information.
When the A/C works, does it work fine? Adequate cooling when the vehicle is moving as well as when it is stopped? Duct temps always cold on both passenger and driver side?

What is coolant temperature gauge doing while driving or at standstill?

Could be problems in two systems: engine cooling and A/C.

No codes. No check engine.
When the AC works it works great when stopped or moving.
gauge is normal. not moving.

So, I think arpad is on the right track. You have an engine cooling fan problem which may be related to engine thermostat or may be the fan itself.
What is your coolant temperature reading?

On mine, it was the thermostat. Replacing the thermostat is one of the easiest DIYs on this car. I got an ACDelco at Autozone for $75 but I have a commercial account. Expect to pay $100.

K great. Temp seems normal. I will change it out.

But would a thermostat cause the ac not to throw cold air?

Generally, Yes. A bad thermostat will eventually result in A/C shutting off. Because the condenser is forward of the radiator, the a/c will eventially turn off at a prescribed coolant temperature to reduce load both on the engine and cooling system.

The air exiting the condenser is warmer and it takes several HP to spin the compressor.

I would not be in such a hurry. For those who replaced the thermostat, was the temp gauge behaving completely normal prior to replacing? Mine, for example, climbs to ~200 and stays pegged.
This post shows exactly where mine stays put:

IDK about the Camaro but years ago I had a similar situation on a Buick. Replaced the thermostat to no avail. Finally resolved the issue replacing a relay that controlled the AC. That was on a 1980s vehicle, therefore it may not apply here.

Yeah if your temps are normal it's not your thermostat. The actual temp sensors inside the car are prone to failing and it sounds like what is happening to yours was what was happening to mine before I had my dealership replace them a few years ago.
