Rear hub bearing bolt failure

Posting this in case it helps someone else.

The mounting bolts for the rear hub bearing backed themselves out while I was on track this weekend. Factory installed, never been touched. Under lateral load it felt fine, but driving straight it would wander. It almost felt like being hit by a gust of cross wind.

Listen to you car on track, it might try to tell you something important. Dont ignore it.

Yeah, but it tram lines so bad on the road (especially with SC3s)

But yes, I agree feel the car it usually tells u something is up before it goes all the way out.

If it trams on the road, your tires are shot or your alignment is messed up. These are regarded as being very good in regards to not tram lining even in 1LE form. It's rare that mine does and only when the road has visible nasty ruts.

Naw, the SC3s tramline bad. The PS4S not nearly so bad.

When the road isn’t perfect and the bumps/creases in the road cause your car to pull to one side or the other.

i thought the known issue was with the axle nut not being tight enough? This is the 3 mounting bolts for the hub backing out..

Wow, the service manual says to use red thread locker on them when reusing them while replacing the rear hub. Maybe the factory didn't torque them fully on your car or forgot the thread locker? Were the bolts still tight on the other 3 corners?

yes...it happened to me on my '17. The factory bolts had no thread locker either. Car wandered in a straight line as mentioned above...very dangerous.

Any chance you have a picture you could share? I have a 2017 SS 1LE as well and noticed that after I changed my rear control arms and toe links (SPL) I seemed to get more rear tram-lining. It could be because of the spherical bushings and/or more negative rear camber, but sounds similar to this. Probably a good idea for me to check these regardless. I haven’t noticed any issues on track, however. Is it an issue on the front hubs as well?

they are easy to see but you must release the lower control arm and toe arm to gain access to all three bolts. You must also remove the large 36mm nut and push the axle back. The three bolts are nothing special and are in a trianglar configuration.

I was able to gain access just by removing the axle nut and using a mini sledge to knock the axle back some. No control arm removal was required.
