msd vacuum leaks
so before I get my car tuned, for my current mods, I wanted to make sure I had no vacuum leaks, when I got my msd back from porting I was lazy and did not torque manifold in suggested pattern, any how it made some noises like the gasket popping into place when I tightened it down... I have since loosened and re torqued correctly, but it has always been in the back of my head whether or not its right....
so I bought a smoke generator, masked off the throttle body and pumped smoke in through the brake line. smoke did come out from the back, couldn't really see where, so I ordered a new gasket from holley…. 1. has any one siliconed gasket in place, as I don't see any reason why this manifold would nee to come apart again since it has been ported already.. 2. if its leaking from brake booster connection what is the best route to deal with that? any suggestions or experiences with this issue would be greatly appreciated..

Had a similar problem, my port seals ( the blue rubber pieces that come off the stock manifold) weren’t perfectly sealed. I took them off and made sure they were snug and flush. Torqued everything back down and problem was solved.

yes...
I don't believe its coming from port seals... but gonna look in the morning... my question is why not use silicone as well as the gasket to hold the upper and lower piece of the manifold together, I cant see how that could hurt, and also if its turns out to be coming from brake booster line what then?

well I went ahead and replaced all gaskets cleaned and torqued everything and still leaks from the back...
so I was able to take this picture, any how as you might notice the tube is not all the way in, even though I pushed reasonably hard I thought that's how it was supposed to be... then a couple of minutes ago I gave it another shot and she went all the way in... I will smoke test again but I bet problem is solved... feel stupid now

Not stupid. Be proud you successfully did your own troubleshooting. Good luck.

U can take that hose off the car and put in on the manifold on the bench. That’s the biggest help with that stupid hose. Disconnect the other end so u take it on and off on the workbench

yeah believe it or not I did that and its been like that for a while, it just didn't want to go in any more than that , so I just thought that it was that way with the msd…
but after seeing the leak I really messed with it and it still didn't go in, and then I tried again and all the sudden it went in all the way..... car is definitely running differently and the throttle hang issue is all but gone... I wonder if the car is going to relearn a bit and if I should re load my tune

Clear the LTFT
few things about the Msd. I wouldn’t leave the bolts that connect the top and bottom tight for more than a day or so when off the car. If u look, it is all wavy until it gets bolted to the heads. It looks very obvious that it could get warped like that. MSD stores them with no torque on the bolts, that could be why. So to it sum up, if the manifold is off the car, I’d loosen all the bolts as delivered by Msd. Second during install, the pops are normal, it’s closing the corners up. |
