Either debris collected while driving, or do you park in a garage? Being from Toronto your garage will probably be much warmer than it is outside right now, giving the local mice a nice warm home for the night - same thing happened to me; went to clean the engine bay after a winter and found not just leaves (which I occasionally do, collected while driving around) but chewed-up paper towels and whatnot; turned out (or figured) it was a mice home. I promptly set up mouse traps around the garage and caught several over the next few days.

Squirrels or mice do that. They like the warm engine bay and store food in it and be aware they also like chewing on wires to take a look around for damaged wires.

This is my leading theory too. Wild. Thankfully no sign of chewed wires.
