Track day odd rotor wear

All,

Posting here for a buddy who was with me at Buttonwillow who is wondering if it's normal for the ZL1 rotors to wear like the attached pic at a track day -- a hot track day i might add with mid 90s ambient.

My 1LE does not have the same wear pattern -- wondering if it has to do with ZL1 rotor vs pad size not covering full area but don't think so

OEM pads? There is a lot of confusion on the ZL1 pads vs non Z pads (1LE) and I have seen the non Z pads have a smaller swept area than Z pads - even though they fit the calipers.

Interesting. Got a similar wear pattern on just one of my front rotors (driver side) after the last track day. Previous 3 track days showed nothing but perfect pad transfer and no heat checking. OEM ZL1 pads for me, and this last track day was on a track that is very easy on brakes overall, but one big 150+ to 80 mph brake zone in which I was using the brakes a little more aggressively than normal and occasionally into the abs. Looks to me like some localized higher heat in the center of the pad?

I noticed some marking on my rotors after my first track day but they looked more like thin black stripes. I chalked it up to pieces of rubber getting stuck on the pads since it didn't look blue like excess heat. They went away after a few days of normal driving.

Might be from a chunk of rubber....would explain why it was only on one rotor for me. I had enough clag in that wheel to make a pretty decent sized pile on the driveway when removing wheels. My rotor looks normal again as well after just a few hundred street miles.

This is normal. All zl1 / zle rotors wear like this. I’ve gotten two years out of my oe set and getting ready to replace. Micro cracking and discoloration started almost immediately. One of the tells the cars been tracked.

Normal. What you're seeing is good pad transfer to the rotor. If it was blotchy and uneven, you'd feel the brake pedal pulsing, but I'll bet the brakes felt great.
