It really all depends on the system. these are my favs:
NES: Spy Hunter
SNES: Top Gear
N64: S.F.Rush & Rush 2049
PC: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit & High Stakes (GRID but its post Gran Turismo)
PS2/3: Gran Turismo

If you didn't have to pump quarters into a machine, they don't count as arcade games.

Oh man, I spent soooo many hours at the arcade it wasn't funny. Centipede was my fav. Always had the high score. Best times were when report cards were realeased, our local arcade gave extra coins for good grades, so all my friends would come. Ahh, to be young again.

First racing game I ever played was Test Drive:

But Stunts was a lot better, until we lost the manual. It was coded so that you crashed unless you entered the proper code word from the manual.

Talking

In the style of Pac Man, another top down 2D maze game from Namco via Midway. 1980 Rally-X, squirt oil and release smoke to foil chasing cars, and fool 'em into crashing into each other. I tell you, it was exciting.

Pollution!...OMG!!

Autoduel on the Apple ][.

Then there was the stuff by Papyrus (Indy 500, NASCAR) that were great racing SIMULATIONS! I abslutely HATE certain driving games because there was little realism. Any game in which you can rub a wall and still easily pass stuff was a game that I felt deserved being flushed down the toilet.

Big + 1 here! I still have Top Gear for the SNES, although the system wasn't working properly the last time I tried. I also have every version of Mario Kart to date!

Any other Mario Kart Wii players? If so, post or PM your friend code and I will look up and post or PM mine.

Loved that game. Once you figured out that you had to rip the wheel at the sharp curve you could play it along time on one quarter.

I like most racing games, only one I couldn't get away from was Motor City Online. Big MMO online car racing game. It was awesome. I played it from Beta until just before they shut down the server....

Makes me sad to this day it's over...They need a part 2 now that the internet support is more there.

**Edit**
This is William
