Did they send it a letter telling owners that the new recommend oil was that? No.

5w30 is the recommend oil for 2017 - 2018 ZL1s and still is.
This is a stupid take. Use 0W40 on all model years. It's the exact same engine.

What's messed up is 0W40 Supercar is the oil for Camaros and Corvettes yet the local O'Reilly's and AutoZone etc. don't carry anything but the Euro blend. Super frustrating and a diamond in the rough if you do find it there.

What a pain for those who street their ZLE cars and run periodically weekend warrior road course stuff. The manual states use 0w-40 Supercar unless you're racing it, then run 15w-50. Wonder what harm there could be just keeping the 15w-50 in for the street at all times?

I just got the 0w40 M1 SC from AutoZone, some stores have it but I got next day delivery for free and 20% off. Best deal I've found recently.

I'd bet it's NBD unless it's cold out, you'll probably get a bit more startup wear at low temps and slightly reduced fuel economy.

Interesting...I can get it from my local Advance and AutoZone, but they won't apply any discounts, it specifically says it is excluded in my cart. Bummer.

Better to do it the other way around... just run 0W40 all the time like the regular Z. Especially if you're not a super experience track driver pulling more G's.

I do have to drive around to get it but ALL of them have the Euro blend.

At least you can find it.

I believe they just recommend 15w-50 for track only, because of higher cold start wear and tear. The thick oil needs more time to lubricate the cold engine.

I did run last week fresh 0W40 at the track. Oil temp went up to 290°F. Lateral G forces were between 1.2-1.4. I got the OEM 1LE Aero on my ZL1.
What you guys think about the Mobil 1 FS X2 5W50? To my understanding it should work perfectly for street and track use. I probably use it next time at Track and for street use. The 15W50 isn't available for me.

Only takes a single space and/or mild dyslexia to confuse "Mobil 10w40" and "Mobil1 0w40"

As others have said, 0w40 Supercar is what you want for the street and for non-1LE track use. Once the warranty is up, use whatever oil you wish. And whichever way you choose to go, I'd recommend sending samples to Blackstone-labs to confirm you're getting the result you want out of your oil, given your particular driving conditions and climate.

EDIT: The official GM communication from March 2018 that your son's mechanic friend was talking about is below, reference here: https://www.corvetteactioncenter.com...le.php?id=1389 which clearly mentions Camaro (with an asterisk that excludes 1LE trims I presume to avoid confusion with the 15w50 track use requirement) in the table. Although the document title states only Corvette there was no second document published specific to Camaro ... typical GM_Things(TM). A screenshot of the same webpage was posted on our forums back in 2019: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...0#post10414750 .

Subsequent to this 2018 update, the part numbers and names of the 0w40 have changed from "ESP Formula" to "Supercar"
