ZL1 vs SS body dimension differnces.

Hello Everyone.

I'm trying to figure out where GM added dimensions for the ZL1 body. I found a video online with a rep from GM stating the ZL1 is wider in the front fenders and rear quarter panel but that was all he said. I have noticed along with others that my ZL1 seamed wider than the SS model but it has been hard finding any information on it. I did a quick look with a tape measure on track width (outside of tire) and found my ZL1 to be roughly 3" wider than a standard SS. I realize the tire do stick out a little bit but that does not account for the complete difference. Does anyone have any info or links to exactly what the differences are? I will say GM did a nice job because it is hard to pin point it unlike for example a Dodge Challenger Hellcat wide body with the molded in type flare. I wouldn't exactly refer to a ZL1 as a wide body but there is a difference.

Thanks!
Rod

You'd think 1.5" per side would be more noticeable.

How much of that 3" is simply the wider width of the tires themselves.? The ZL1's wheels are more than likely wider than the wheels on the SS to begin with.

Stand alone no not so much, but next to a SS or LT it is for sure.

I believe it was said that only the front panel is really different, bulged a little more. Don't think the ZL1 is wider than a SS 1LE and they run about the same tires, the side skirts do make it appear wider.

I know for sure the front fenders are wider and have different part numbers. I don't think there is any difference in the rear quarters, but I could be wrong.

That was my understanding too.

Thanks for the info. I think my next step is to actually measure the rear quarter panel on the SS and ZL1. With the tire differences, wheel differences and body curves/lines, it is really hard to tell.

The front tires on the SS 1LE stick out much more noticeably than on the Zl1, so there’s definitely something going on there. I remember someone claiming that the actual fender wasn’t any different as far as width, but that it was mounted different to give a wider track. I’m not sure that really makes sense, but I remember reading that.

I remember reading that too, but that's not the case. The ZL1 actually has a different fender. It is pretty much impossible to look at and say, I see where they added the width. It blends into the curves very well. Unless something has changed, I never found a single website that didn't list the same part number for the ZL1 as the other Camaros. When I called the dealer, they were even seeing the same thing, until they entered my VIN. Then a totally different number popped up.

I have found by research that the zl1 has 1" wider wheels than my ss. Not sure on offsets.

I have a ZLE and fit 345/30/19 PSC2 and Hoosier R7 no problem, moved the wiring harness but it was barely rubbing there on Auto Club Speedway turn 1-2 NASCAR banking at ~140 mph.

Does an SS fit 345s on ZLE 19” wheels? I thought rear fenders on ZL1/ZLE were different.
