I'd want a newer car, so I'd push for replacement. They're not all problem ridden.

Depends on what "replacement" means. If that means a new '18, do it. You can always sell it and be better off and put the funds down on a vette.

Say goodbye to GM, find a new manufacturer, and a new dealer. if I had all these problems I wouldn't give GM another shot......

I will miss my 2SS but this is more trouble than I can deal with.

Now here's the million dollar question...what should I opt for, repurchase and just focus on my 99 Z28? or replacement and hope I never have anymore issues?

The downfall with the repurchase is - they will likely add depreciation on there and I may still have a car loan without the car.

The downfall with replacement is - This will be my 3rd 6th Gen in less than 3 years with the previous two replaced due to problems too complicated for GM to resolve.

Lol, you must really, really like the Camaro. I don't blame you because I really like the car. This may sound nuts, but given this new info, I'd let GM fix it if that's the only thing that's wrong.

If it was one of those electrical gremlins that couldn't be tracked down, that'd be one thing, but this is fixable.

They say there's a sucker born every day. I can't lie when I say there are DEFINITELY more reliable vehicles than any of the Camaro's I've owned -- but when you turn the key and hear that V8 roar to life and the whole house shake (my apartment literally rattles if I crank my car in the garage) knowing the road ahead is in for fury... you just don't care that you can't shift out of park, or that your rear axle very may well just grenade at the end of the drive way, or that you may have to man handle your $50,000 car after losing power steering or even that your LT1 may very well even explode while you're cruising with the sunroof open on a sunny sweet day... ...until it happens that is!

I've been crazy about them ever since I graduated high school. I got my license in a 95 Z28 which was the family car. My whole teenage years were built around going to our F-Body club and it was the only thing I looked forward to when I was young. I later ended up with a 98 V6 which was stolen, then a 97 RS which I fell in love with because it was black and leather but the previous owner just dumped that car to hell and I was constantly fixing it until I finally got fed up with it and traded it for a 01 Z28 which for the most part was maintenance free -- unfortunately good things had to come to an end as I was forced to sell it so I could continue my college...

I later went with a Ford Focus, and a 02 Firebird W68 (V6) which started off with a bad fuel pump, was intended to be a project car. It got hit 3 times and survived all 3 - it was a die hard but the 3.8L motor approached 200k miles and finally it just couldnt take anymore and one day on my way home the hood erupted in smoke and I popped open the hood to find a puddle of oil all over the pavement...and she was toast.

Attempted to do an LS1 swap which went to hell because the transmission shop gave me a LT1 tranny instead of a LS1 tranny by mistake, I made that work but then the brand new motor came with a leaking head gasket right out the shop... I was moving at the time and didnt have time to address it so I sent it to another shop and this dude spends 6 months letting it sit on the lot doing absolutely nothing to it telling me he's working on it or getting to it and had the heads off during a rainy season and the entire motor rusted... He provided a replacement motor and the stupid next shop decided to use the old oil pump from the rusted motor sending me home, lost oil pressure halfway home, motor siezed...
I got fed up and sold the car (and they knew what they were getting into)...

Bought a Infiniti G35 - ran absolutely flawless for years, upgraded to Infiniti G37 - no issues with it either... bought my 99 Z28 once again because I just havent had enough... A/C didnt work, needs a trans mount, needed new headlights, body kit was falling off the car and found out later that the dufus who installed it CUT THE ROCKER PANELS OFF THE CAR , needed a new EGR Valve, Brakes, and short story just about everything in that car INSIDE OUT has either been replaced, or repaired except the motor itself..I had the steering rack replaced on that car and they dropped the alternator breaking the exciter wire and didn't tell me, and let me drive off like that too...so I get halfway home and POOSH, My power window switches and door locks literally caught fire as my car died... that almost ended in a law suit. To date on the 99 I've replaced 3 batteries and 4 alternators, 2 water pumps, 1 PS Pump, all pulleys, 3 sets of sepertine belts because of a squeal that wouldnt go away until I switched to Gatorback, 3 stereos.

I decided, maybe if I get a newer Camaro...I wont has as many problems and hey I'll have a new car warranty... so I started off with a 2015 Camaro V6 1LT...The car was good but...after seeing the 6th Gen I could no longer appreciate the 5th Gen... and it just started feeling like driving around an old brick and it didnt really feel sporty...I was just going to use my 99 Z28 as a spare car and project car...which I did at first... well...my lust for the Camaro V6 got me and I traded up for a 2017 1LT V6.. ..That car was quite an awesome car, freakish fuel mileage and felt sporty...only issue was... the heat intermittently stopped working and GM wasnt going to do squat about it.

Then at last the 2SS... I had been wanting an SS for a long time...it was literally...the icon of the pinnacle of my success in a sense - not in the regard of becoming egocentric but because all through this I had been busting my nuts off in my career trying to work my way up in the IT industry and for a long time I literally thought I would never ever in my life be able to afford said car. Yet finally after working two jobs day and night 80 hours a week I put a huge dent in my V6 car loan and managed to trade up to my 2SS with cash down.

When I drove home in it, I literally could not believe I was finally in an SS...it felt impossible like it was a dream and it was destined to be taken from me..but issues came along with it too -- for starters my attention is much more focused on my SS than it is the 99 and my dreams for my 99 Z28 - I thought they would go away...but they havent... Although I dont crave more power than the SS has..I still long to complete her rather than watching her sit and collect dust. Yet...the SS actually does mean alot to me as well.

What Im mostly afraid of isn't necessarily the problem but they're sending their astrophysicists to screw in a light bulb... All they had to do from day 1 was replace the damn torque sensor and my car has been down for 40 days now and they're going to RE-ANALYZE the entire incident instead of taking the code that they SCANNED AND VERIFIED as the steering torque sensor quite possibly willing to waste ANOTHER MONTH of my time and not even replace the sensor...instead they may literally come up with something else that has nothing to do with the problem after another 30 days.

Fellow IT guy here as well. I've also had my fair share of junkers and misfortunes leading up to my MS3 and finally the SS. The MS3 was a solid car for 11 years that will be missed when it's finally sold. I don't realistically expect the SS to be as trouble free, but it's such a great car all round that I'm willing to take a chance. And thanks to this forum, I pretty much know what to look out for.

It's a shame you have had such bad luck. And on top of that, to have an incompetent dealer who could not arrange a simple warranty repair. I wish you all the luck going forward.

op Need4 - Hope this all works out for you.

I want his Camaro so bad for many of the same reasons

Was woken up from naps as a baby by wide-open Chevy V8 race engines in the garage

Was trying to watch youtube Mustang video today, but got nausea when showed the pony emblems. Can't help it.

The sixth gen Camaro is a Supercar, but the reliability is too low if you NEED a reliable DD.

Some have zero issues, most have some issues, and some are Lemons.

GM should, (but won't) spend a few more cents on things like torque sensors.

They COULD make them and other parts 95% reliable if they weren't so governed by the bean-counting accountants.

I complain because I want them to fix it. I too am addicted to that start-up roar. Chevy style.

I went to the dealer again today.

Dude...I am honestly blown away by the complete idiocy going on here.

So the engineer gets to Austin and meets with the tech. The dealer SHOWS HIM the DTC showing my steering torque sensor malfunctioning and SHOW HIM this is my third attempt of repair and they've never tried replacing this part...

guess what this idiot does...

"I've never heard or seen anything like this.. ..call General Motors TAC...bye..."

And now the dealership is going to go down a rabbit hole with GM TAC, who's going to want more diagnostics and diagnosis and literally disassembling my vehicle when they have a CONFIRMED probable cause already...and likely not even replace the steering torque sensor and point the problem to something else totally not related.

I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW INCREDIBLY RIDICULOUS THIS IS LEADING TO BE.

I sent my final repair order to GM last week after I took the car back to the shop (hoping that we could use this attempt as this is the third attempt, this was also before I found out a final repair order isnt even necessary given my car has been held for more than 30 days.) GM called me and they won't use this attempt as the final repair as they would have to send it to one of their preferred dealers not one of my choosing so I told them I will just send my repurchase / replacement request.

I mailed that today priority and certified. Per Georgia Law (car was purchased there and Texas is requiring me to use the Georgia Lemon Law process) if the car has been out of service for more than 30 days, a Final Vehicle Repair Order is not required. I am hoping GM finally straightens this out...if they continue dicking around and not honoring my request I will have to sue them.

Just curious, what would they charge you if you asked them to replace the sensor and you'd just pay the bill.

Man, I'd get rid of this car, run and stay away from 6th gens.

Just reading what you're going through is making me stressed. I can't imagine what you're feeling.

I haven't asked because it would piss me off to no end if I had to pay for it but this is getting so ridiculous I may have to.

I want to but I am reading horror stories where manufactures let this sort of stuff drag out for years without repurchasing or replacing, even after a lemon law claim, lawsuit, or consumer protection unit and even a judge gets involved many times the issue is still present..Although some cases have a fairly nice pay out in the end...I'm very worried that what may be occuring at this point and my lawyer even told me that the likelyhood of GM buying my car back even after legal pursuit is slim. I want my issue resolved now. I am extremely pissed at GM.

Update:
Dealer sent me a text stating they are replacing the whole rack.

Trust the car and accept the repair or continue trying to lemon?

At this point, if it were me, I would let the repair be made and see if that does indeed fix the problem. Maybe thats all it needs and it will be good from here on out. BUT, any LITTLE issue after this, ITS GONE!!

Too little too late for me at this point. You know what you can live with. I would think long and hard if you can deal with thought rolling around in your head after all you have been through of when is this bitch gonna break again. If you can, replace the rack, roll out. If not, screw GM, try something else.
