E85 vs. 93
I just wanted to ask around..
I run strictly E85 since I've been tunes with the DSX kit I had installed. Obviously, gas mileage is horrible now but the E85 definitely improves power. With that said, has anyone ever alternated use between 93 and e85? Are there any benefits to alternating use? Downsides? Main reason to ask, is if I've got a busy day and am using the Camaro I can easily use 1/2 tank on e85 very very quickly and I feel I'm actually spending tons on gas during the weekends despite the cheaper price. Just curiosity questions! If this helps: 2010 Camaro 2SS - Inferno Orange Metallic - 6 Speed Manual Current Mods: Vararam Tunable Intake Corsa Extreme Catback Exhaust System Kooks Longtube 1-7/8 in. what are you tuned for? if you have a straight e85 tune then no.....if you have a flex tune, then mix all you want and it will adjust.

I am tuned for all. I run E85. I was looking for some insight for a little education.

The benefit of alternating back and forth between 93 and E85 is that you're going to spend less on fuel than if you ran E85 all of the time. E85 has a higher octane rating because it consists of 85% ethanol vs. 93 octane having the standard 10% ethanol mixture (or at some gas stations, 0% ethanol). If you're tuned for both, run 93 on the street and fill up with E85 before hitting the strip.

I'll be honest depending on the price it usually equals out for me. Here in Michigan we usually see 1.70$ on average cheaper then 93 and you use 40% more fuel so it is almost a even trade here. Now as for plus side is on my flex tune I like running e85 spring through fall and then once it gets chilly I switch back to 93 to keep from rough cold starts. Also when it gets stored for the next 4 months of winter it is better to have 93 in then e85.

Sometimes for economy what I'll do is mix some e85 as low cost effective octane booster to cheap 87 low octane for better mpg and price.
5gal of 108 octane e85 plus 15gal of 87 octane gives you 92 octane cheaply and mpg won't be more than 5-10% lower than straight 93 or 91 pump gas. |
