Let's not forget that the scumbag thieves here are the ones at fault.

OP - so sad to hear about your loss. Don't get worked up about the advice here about insurance. Just report it full up the way it happened and simply admit that when you walked away to go your you're hotel room - you just forgot to get the extra key out of the car. In a past life I worked as an insurance adjuster for years. Being forgetful and leaving keys in a car is not a reason a claim can be denied.
I'll add that my Mom did this in 1988 in my Grandmothers driveway - left the keys in her '85 Buick Regal Limited and it was stolen RIGHT OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. So yeah it's happened personally. To this day my Mom admits to her stupidity.

There's an electronic box that scans for the keyfob frequencies and can open and start the car. Several stolen in California last year. I keep my fob in a Faraday bag to prevent that. A local TV station did a story on this a few months ago and recommended keeping your fob in a metal can when you're inside your house if the car is outside.
The FOB doesn't have to be used for them to pick up the code?? Honestly IMO anti theft devices, wheel locks, etc. just keep an honest person honest. Anything they come up with to protect your property eventually criminals are going to have a way around it.

I've heard a lot of times that if the car is stolen with the keys in the ignition then insurance companies tend to not pay out. Sucks this happened bud let us know what the insurance ends up doing also did you add all your modifications to your insurance also?

What a shame that the thieves weren't laying there choking in their own fluids. At least they didn't hurt someone.

I work in claims and this not true. An insurance policy is a contract and the language in the contract is followed by the insurance company and I have never seen any language in an auto policy to this effect.

They could cancel your coverage when your policy expires, but they cannot deny the claim.
