My First Oil Change @ 1000 miles...

First off, I'm 45yrs old and I've been a car guy since my early teens however I was kinda blown away at the dark greyish color of my oil at just a tad over 1000 miles. This taking into consideration that the Blk Beast holds 10 qts... So let's perform a few maintenance upgrades...

You're dealing with your experience from a while ago. New engines almost turn the oil black immediately, you can't tell by Color more. Due to higher engine operting temperatures these days, and other EPA tweaks, oil turns dark within hundreds of miles. It has no effect on the quality of the oil

Well I don't doubt anything you've said but my C6 LS3 NEVER had oil the color of this but I think it maybe worth keeping an eye on it. I changed it to pennzoil ultra platinum right along with a new magnetic drain plug.I'm sure it's no issues...

Are you changing oil every 1000 miles?

Yeah, I dropped mine at 1500 and it was pretty dark. Doing the 5k tonight. See how it looks.

What a waste. Why bother changing early so quickly?

I was about to change mine today because I just hit 1500 miles, and switch to mobil1 full synthetic. But, the oil is so clean I hate to waste 10 quarts of clean oil. The oil life merer says 80% remaining with 42.7 engine hours.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Oil change at 1000 miles? You must have read it from one of the magazine mechanics on these forums. Come see me for an oil change every 1000 miles I'll be a rich AMSOIL dealer.

Hey it's your engine. Don't break it in. Then I'll read your future posts when you cry about engine issues.

You know there's a TSB about changing the oil at 1k miles for LT1s, right? And why are you calling people magazine mechanics on the forums when you're doing the same thing

The car I'm referring to is my 2010 SSTC at 243,000km, I'm just here early waiting for a ZL1. So yeah change your oil early it's hard to say if it helps but it def does not hurt the engine, I've had 0 engine problems in 1/4 million km. I also do Coolant/tranny/spark plugs every 75,000km despite gm saying you can run 120-160k before changing some items, which is way too long IMO.

OP you did the right thing! I have read and talk to other people with the LT1 and it is recommended for the first oil change to be within the first 2,000 miles. I know Corvette owners were having issues with the LT1 engine oil having major shavings in their oil at first oil change. I think it is a good idea to change it for the first time early like this and see what it looks like coming out of the pan and what's in it.
