Exclamation Lifter noice or header exhaust leak ? 2010 SS

Trying to figure out the best way to go about this . 2010 camarosswith long tube headers not sure which brand , bought it used. Has borla x pipe /attack , high flow cats . So it's hard to tell if this ticking noice is a bad, sticky worn lifter or just a simple header gasket leak ? Will post video if I get any feedback . But Its seems louder at a cold start . After driving to work out in park , and revd it up in park and the ticking noise was hardly noticable or was that because I was in park and not underload ?

Manual or auto? If auto and only at random startup, it's possibly the afm/dod lifters. Search for TSB for faulty lifters. They're not catostrophic but sound that way.

The collapsed lifter noise lasts only a second or two. It is caused by the AFM lifters, which are activated by oil pressure, to lose pressure when the engine is off for a few hours or more. The noise stops as soon as the lifters regain pressure.

Permanently damaged lifters are a different problem.

Hopefully someone will weigh in on how to locate a gasket leak in a non-invasive way.

If it's a leaky gasket you can check using a flexible piece of hose (heater hose). Place one end to your ear and the other end where the primary tube is welded to the header flange. If you find one louder than the others you found your leak. You can do the same for the collector gaskets and where your piping slides together.

MR.ONE POST...……..most likely its the normal tick of the typewriter sound noted from the roller lifters of a LS engine which is louder when you modify the exhaust with headers...…… no sound clip no advice.

The Mobil 1 oil filter has a valve that prevents back flow of oil after you shut down. Thus fewer dry start ups. My DOD start up lifter noise lasts about 1 to 2 seconds now as opposed to around 30 seconds with a regular oil filter.

The lifter tick problem comes from pressure loss within the AFM lifters. When pressurized, they operate normally, when de-pressurized, they collapse when 4 cylinders are not firing. At idle, the engine is always in 8 cylinder mode, so the AFM lifters are pressurized and are supposed to stay that way until the next start. When I had mine replaced with the new design, there was no longer any lifter tick even after 6 months of winter storage.

I use Delco PF48E filters.

This.

If it sounds like a sowing machine, it's normal.

It's no doubt the lifters if it's an L99 auto. My early '10 SS L99 lifters have never
made a sound, never even once. I attribute that to frequent oil changes, 15 so far
with only 58,000 miles. Change your oil and change it often imo.
