You know if a ring can grow from heat enough to butt the gap together say 9 thousands looks like their is gonna be much bigger problems. For 1 what is the ring groove clearance? 2 or 3 thousand. The ring caint just grow one way from heat. The whole ring would grow and the ring would seize in the ring groove. Then all kinds of bad things would happen.

Everything round that we make from 4340 annealed (16 HRC) that is hardened to 38 HRC grows 40 microns from the centerline. So all outside diameters grow 40 microns larger and all bores grow 40 microns larger.

Rings butt together too, but how much does the piston grow before a catastrophe happens with the rings? I’d also see the ring groove in the piston growing too.

I gotta think 40 microns is way way less than say 10 thousands. Looks like its 1.5 thousands. That would still leave a gap of 7.5 thousands.
