Want to add power but I live in California :-(

I have to get the car smogged every 2 years so that rules out Long tubes. What have CA guys done to get power that is carb legal? Not ready to go FI so just bolt on stuff.

Had JBA carb legal shorty headers. I believe there is already a thread on this subject in the California Region section.

I wonder what people do there cause there are a lot of modded cars. I think they just take everything off before inspection but that's a big hassle so what I really think is that people have connections or a friend inspect or something

How about shorty headers with high flow cats? Will that not work? It won't gain you as much as if you had long tubes, but it will definitely help free up some locked up power.

I think the only options you have, to stay carb legal and get big power, is the turbonectics kit or the magnuson heartbeat.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have added Kenne Bell, Paxton, Powerdyne, and Magnuson superchargers to cars I have built in the past and no longer have the time for always wrenching and tuning. I'm in search of 30HP so maybe those shorty headers and a CAI.

If the funds are there the 2016 or 2017 SS should solve the problem and not need any mods .

Dont rule out ling tubes completely. I'm no expert and lucky enough to live where there are no inspections. But I know there are those out there that have passed with headers and cam. Talk to some of our vendors or your local speed shops. I think it can be done.

I used to live in California. Honestly, unless the item has a CARB EO number, it's not supposed to be on your car and you will fail. Touching the stock cats for any reason other than them being defective will also net you a failure and a sizable fine. Long tubes will not pass, high flow cats will not pass and the vast majority of other power related items will not pass.

I think the easiest thing you can do if you're looking for power specifically, is to get a cold air, CARB approved short tube headers and a tune for 91 octane. When your inspection comes, unless the cold air is CARB legal, take it off and remove your tune. Then get your inspection. Pass it and put it and the tune back on.

However, there are other ways to make your car quicker without adding power.

I have jba shorties and high flows, that and a smog tune got 32 hp at 5600 rpm and 44 at 6000 rpm. Smog tune will pass as it doesnt eliminate any readiness parameters but tunner needs to know how to do that. Cats will have to be swapped back to stock along with cai at smog time but easy enough. Other then that gears or a maggie is about it in Kali

All of the BS just to have to live in California............... My two cents, you guys can keep it! I don't care if they offered me 15/hr pay increase over living expense difference for my trade, I'd never live there. Modding cars is a passion that I refuse to ever give up. Don't know how the hell you guys do it. Good luck is all I can say and God Bless Texas! Lol

Well we cheat as long as we can...lol but yeah Kali is a pain in most things with our socialist state govt but is what it is. If cars and mods determine your life then yeah best not to move hear, or have to take the legal/fines risk

There are plenty of other aspects to consider when it comes to modifying cars. I lived in California for over 25 years and the things I tend to focus on the most was suspension and over all refinement of the vehicle. The power aspect came secondary. Especially considering how terrible the traffic can be in the Bay Area.
