Is mpg different in the different drive modes?

If it is, has anyone checked how it varies?

Only if that mode makes you drive differently. The mode itself doesn't change the engine tune other than changing throttle sensitivity. So if one mode makes you want to use more throttle than another then you mpg will go down. It's all in how you drive.

I'm thinking that the rev matching would have an affect on mileage. Not sure about the mode, but it probably does--ce

rev matching? that little blip of the throttle really effects MPG? anyone confirm this or have thoughts?

ohhh yeah. It makes a big difference. If you are consistently rev matching to down shift instead of just coasting to a stop, you will see yourself easily lose about 1.5mpg. those blips in throttle add up.

My best city MPG is about 16.5 without rev match on, and with it on, I'm probably good for about 14-15mpg. that's me trying.

but I don't and maintain an average of 13.0

I've read that in Sport mode, it stays in lower gears longer than in Tour mode. This could cause the mpg to be different, even if you drive exactly the same as you would in Tour mode.

Good point. I answered from a m6 view. I didn't consider the auto tranny angle because I think everyone has the m6 like me.

While in track-mode with an A8 it does not drop to V4 at all that I have noticed, the transition to V4 takes longer in sport than it does in tour but it does change. So yes, I would think with all things being equal except the mode selection there may be a small effect on MPG.

In the sport mode when letting up on the throttle after hard acceleration the A8 will not upshift immediately. This would consume somewhat more fuel. The car does not feel like it is driving in a lower gear otherwise.

Wow! but I love the rev matching cuz the blip sounds so awesome. Last time I checked I've been averaging 18 since purchase. and maybe closer to 16 daily. I mostly do short city driving daily, less then 5 miles on 35 mph roads. I get the average up when I visit my GF about 300 miles away once a month or so and just cruise at 85 mph for long stretches on the highway. Love how the car is just barely walking at 85 mph in 6th gear getting like 28 or more MPG.

But if I turned rev match off I could be maybe getting closer to 18 or so daily? I'll have to do some testing. thankful for all the tracking systems in the car. Ultimately the rev match is prolly wroth the 1.5 mpg cuz it just sounds mean. Also can't stop the hot starts whenever I get a chance on these little roads to work, so I'm screwing mpg one way or the other.

I drive in sport mode a lot and honestly if I am driving like I do in Tour...it shifts exactly the same. It's just more eager to downshift and the throttle response pulls you out of AFM quicker.

I've tried this before but AFM will still engage. There's a lot of factors that go into when the car decides to use AFM. I would bet more often than not, people's driving behavior when they switch to Track prevents AFM (i.e. using the paddles, heavier on throttle inputs, or just finished some WOT runs).

I honestly thought using the paddles would prevent AFM from engaging for awhile until I actually hit engaged cruise in 8th on level strip of road and saw it engage. I will definitely say Track while using the paddles should keep AFM from engaging the majority of the time.

I have noticed in sport or track, the engine downshifts faster- and feels faster at full throttle. The gear shifts on A8 also seem more agressive and faster. I've read that a lot of owners get great mileage in sport, but I agree with ssdan, the biggest factor is how you drive it! Most of the Time I drive in tour with npp on track. Seems like a good balance for me, but sport ups the perf a little more imo

That explains my mpg. The thought always crossed my mind but the sound of the Rev match made it okay
