I think it is a good idea to change it for the first time early like this and see what it looks like coming out of the pan and what's in it.

Not true. The LT1 in the Corvette, if it is a dry sump unit (which is the Z 51 package) , has to have the oil changed @ 500 miles not because of shavings, but because the oil was foaming due to some adhesive they used to put the engine together. The base car got no such 500 mile change and was just changed exactly like the schedule in the Camaro SS.

Completely false - the oil in my S2000 still looked good after 3k miles

If the oil goes dark fast, it's excessive particulate or fuel dilution - every time

Running these cars without a catch can is crazy, all that fuel contaminated oil goes right back to the crankcase

Someone help me out here - new to the Camaro and the LT1. This reply states that all the fuel contaminated oil goes back into the crankcase without a catch can - I was under the impression the catch can kept the fuel / oil mix from being fed into the intake to be burnt off.

Which is true? TIA!

No it's not false......you s2000 is hardly a good example and my info comes from power train engineers....it's a whole new game when the engines run this hot these days and the way syn and blends suspend soot rather than creating sludge.

I'll follow the recommended maintenance schedule but if changing the oil early works for some folks, to each his own.

So when does GM recommend the first oil change?

I plan on doing mine at 1500, to full synthetic, then going to a regular change schedule when I get my car...

I highly recommend sending a sample to Blackstone Labs, cost is $25 and they will tell you what is going on in your engine, I send a sample every 5000 miles. I change oil every 12,000 miles with some hard runs on the strip using Mobil 1.

How much oil do they need for a sample? I may try this after my second oil change, as we know the first won't be the best...for $25, why not.

I believe it's about 3 oz. Go to their website and they will send you everything you need. http://m.blackstone-labs.com/
