Ah the seat belt argument. Would you say you have seen airbags do more harm than good, or more good then harm?

The other question I have is.... If the OP knew there was something wrong with the airbag sensor in the passenger seat, and the issue had been escalated to the dealer (who it sounds like either was not able to replicate the issue, or refused to fix), then why would the OP continue to rely on it to operate in a collision?

A little education and common sense when using a supplemental restraint system goes a long way. Not all, but I believe a large portion of what you've seen may be due to ignorance and/or stupidity. i.e. no seatbelt + srs (airbag) = more harm. Forward facing child seat = more harm. A fire extinguisher can be more harmful if used improperly.

More good than harm...

They are one of those things that when needed are fantastic. The times they go off and you could have lived without them though...

They'll break a nose, put friction burns on the face and arms, etc...

Nothing massive though. Women tend to get upset whenever the face gets touched improperly.

Generally speaking it's in minor accidents where they go off and probably would have been fine had they not.

Of course this is all my opinion.

Seat belts though, never did a thing wrong in my career of 16 years or so.

I'm not suggesting for a second that they should not be used or installed etc.

It's like with anything there will be downfalls but overall they do a lot of good.

the vehicle crash sensor records deployment data as well as near deployment data. After a collision the crash sensor has about 10 to 15 milisec to determine weather the deployment criteria has been met. It is looking at deceleration as well as angular forces. After deployment the system remains powered up for less than 1 sec. Particular attention is paid to weather the passengers are properly positioned in the cab in order to insure that a deployment does not injure anyone.
The crash sensor as well as the physical damage to the vehicle holds the answers to why deployment or non-deployment has occurred. GM as well as insurance companies and police have software to examine the data. Let the experts help answer you concerns.

I was in a head on accident at 60 mph in a 92 Olds with first generation air bag. After the wreck I had to kick out the back window to get out because the frame was so warped the doors wouldn't open. I had contusions on the knuckles of my left hand--the air bag deployment slammed it into the drivers window hard enough to crack the window. I had contusions on both shins from hitting the bottom of the dash. That was it. Pretty remarkable considering the force of the impact. I'm a big believer in air bags.

Anyone who says airbags and or seatbelts do more harm than good, is a fool. I work in the colission industry and see wrecked cars every single day. Speaking with customers, tow drivers along with my person experience with an airbag deployment....I will never own another car without modern SRS in it. Aside from my 1st gen Camaro of course.
