What’s the over under on EV owners getting stranded when the cold reduces their driving range and strands them this weekend?

Zero stranded EV drivers? 1,000? 10,000? A nice class action lawsuit might be just the thing to restore some sanity.

We don’t get much here, and that’s a good thing. Three years in Germany, five in upstate NY and three in Denver, I’ve seen my share.

To be fair, even if the Camaro were specifically the best snow-driving vehicle around, I wouldn't use one to go rescue someone in bad weather. What if there was more than one adult person who needed rescued? Where are you going to put the second? In the back seat? Not if they're over age ten, you're not.

You are certainly successful at being unlikeable, but not successful at making a point.

If by "rescue" you mean a tow truck, then obviously... duh. These aren't tow trucks but neither is any car. If by "rescue" we mean drive over there and give people a ride home, then yes, I'll do that in this, in snow.

Most people neglect their tire tread design and how it compares with the driving conditions at the time. Some neglect them altogether, entirely. I'll put my SS on Blizzaks up against most people with bald all season tires in an SUV any day. Especially if we're talking about icy conditions, Blizzaks are my go-to. My two fwd sedans have Weathergrip tires, which is a Blizzak tread design on an all-season compound that does really well in snow and ice (not as good as Blizzak given they are harder, but better than any other all-season i've tried).

Also, we are talking about extreme cold, not snow. Extreme cold greatly reduces the range of an EV, by a lot. Consider you can get 1/4th the range you thought you had. So "stranded" is just the equivalent of running out of gas. And yes, a Camaro can give them a ride home.

One thing to note when reading that article, it says freezing temperatures, which likely means 32ish. The article I read, which I’ll try to find and link, was talking about 20 degrees and 41% loss. Imagine what the loss is at zero. Probably close to 2/3. You’re basically screwed.

And before a fast charge, the Tesla will pre-condition the batteries (heat them up) which really eats up range fast (source: friends who are Tesla owners).

I want to see you drive your 1LE in 17 inches of snow and say its fine. You've seen your share of plowed roads. Now try one that isn't plowed.

And it won't matter what tires you have.
